George W. Bush kicks off World Series with ceremonial first pitch

20:32 27.10.2023

Former President George W. Bush made a grand entrance at the World Series opener as he threw out the ceremonial first pitch to former Texas Rangers catcher Ivan Pudge Rodriguez. The crowd erupted with applause as Bush, a former Texas governor, walked onto the field in his white jacket adorned with the Rangers' red T logo. This was a special moment for Bush, who had previously served as the managing partner of the Rangers from 1989 to 1994.

The significance of the occasion was not lost on Bush, who took a moment to reminisce with former Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter before the pitch. Jeter, now a TV analyst, reminded Bush of their conversation back in 2001 when he advised the president not to bounce the pitch during the first World Series game in New York after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Jeter had warned Bush that bouncing the pitch would result in boos from the crowd. However, Bush, now in Texas, realized that the fans in his home state would be more forgiving. "Well, this is Texas," Jeter recalled saying, "You bounce it, they won't boo you." Bush replied, "No, no. It doesn't matter now."

As Bush stepped up to the mound, the crowd grew silent with anticipation. He took a deep breath, winding up his arm, and released the ball. The throw bounced once before reaching Rodriguez, who effortlessly caught it with his legendary skills. Rodriguez, wearing his familiar No. 7 jersey, smiled at Bush as they exchanged a brief moment of camaraderie.

This was not the first time Bush had thrown out a first pitch at the World Series. In 2001, amidst heightened security after the 9/11 attacks, Bush wore a bullet-proof vest as he threw the ceremonial first pitch at Yankee Stadium. That pitch, delivered from the rubber without a bounce, became an iconic symbol of resilience and unity. Bush had also thrown out ceremonial first pitches with his late father, George H.W. Bush, before Game 4 of the 2010 World Series in Arlington, Texas, and before Game 5 of the 2017 World Series in Houston.

For Rodriguez, this moment held special significance as well. The 13-time Gold Glove player and 14-time All-Star had spent the majority of his career with the Rangers, including the last time they reached the World Series in 2010 and 2011. Being behind the plate to catch Bush's pitch was a fitting tribute to a player who had brought so much success and recognition to the Rangers.

The World Series opener was filled with other exciting moments as well. Former Rangers star Adrian Beltre was set to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 2 to Rangers Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins, adding another layer of nostalgia to the series. Grammy Award winner H.E.R. was scheduled to perform the national anthem before the opener, and Pearl Peterson, this year's Boys & Girls Clubs of America's national youth talent performer, was set to sing it before Game 2.

Bush's involvement in the World Series opener held deep significance, not just for the former president, but also for the fans and players who had witnessed his leadership and love for the game. As the Rangers took on the Arizona Diamondbacks, it was a moment of unity and celebration, reminding everyone of the power of sports to bring people together.
