Dartmouth Basketball Team Votes to Form First College Athlete Union

15:51 05.03.2024

In a historic move, the men's basketball team at Dartmouth University voted 13-2 on Tuesday to form a union, becoming the first-ever college athletes' labor union in the United States. The team's decision to join the Service Employees International Union Local 560 could have significant implications for amateur athletes across the country. The unionization allows the players to negotiate a salary, as well as working conditions such as practice hours and travel policies.

Dartmouth administrators now have five days to file any objections to the vote and 10 days to file an appeal, according to the National Labor Relations Board. If they do not challenge the move, the college will be required to bargain in good faith with the players over a labor contract.

The decision to unionize comes after a ruling by the NLRB regional director, Laura Sacks, who found that Dartmouth basketball players are employees of the school, giving them the right to form a union. This ruling could potentially challenge the NCAA's amateurism model, which has long maintained that players are "student-athletes."

The push for unionization was led by players Cade Haskins and Romeo Myrthil, who highlighted the financial challenges they face as student-athletes. Despite Dartmouth's objections, arguing that the players are students first and athletes second, the NLRB ruling stands, allowing the players to move forward with their unionization efforts.

The outcome of the case could have far-reaching implications for college sports, as it challenges the traditional view of college athletes and their rights. The players' vote to form a union marks a significant milestone in the ongoing debate over compensation and working conditions for amateur athletes in the U.S.
