Suicidal Heavily-Armed Man Foiled in Attack Plan at Colorado Amusement Park

21:12 30.10.2023

A 20-year-old Colorado man was found dead at the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in what appeared to be a suicide, according to the Garfield County Sheriff's Office. The man, who has not been identified, was discovered in the women's restroom of the park by maintenance staff before it opened for the day on Saturday. He was dressed in black tactical clothing with patches and emblems that resembled law enforcement insignia, and was wearing body armor and a ballistic helmet. The man had an AR-style rifle, a handgun, and multiple magazines for each weapon. Investigators also found both real and fake explosives in his possession.

The sheriff's office stated that the man had left a message on the wall of the restroom stating, "I am not a killer, I just wanted to get into the caves." However, Sheriff Lou Vallario noted that they could not confirm if the person found dead had written the message. They also discovered other text on the wall, but it was illegible.

It is believed that the man entered the park illegally before his death. The park itself is located in Glenwood Springs, Colorado and offers rides and cavern tours. The caves extend over 16,000 known feet, according to the park's website.

Authorities suspect that the man intended to carry out an attack of "devastating proportions," given the arsenal of weapons and explosives found in his possession. They also noted that the man most likely would not have been able to legally purchase the firearms due to his age. Colorado recently passed a law raising the age for gun purchases to 21.

The weapons found on the man were "ghost guns," which are unserialized firearms that can be assembled from kits at home. Additionally, investigators discovered fake hand grenades and a pipe bomb near the body, as well as a fake improvised explosive device and another explosive package in the man's car.

The FBI is assisting the sheriff's office in the investigation, which will include going through the man's cell phone and social media accounts and conducting interviews with acquaintances. Sheriff Vallario expressed gratitude that a tragedy was averted, stating that the incident had the potential for something "heinous and gruesome" to occur in the community. The park remains closed as authorities continue to ensure the safety of the premises.
