Pro-Palestinian Protesters Cause Traffic Chaos Across US

03:34 16.04.2024

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators caused chaos across the United States on Monday as they blocked major roadways, bridges, and highways in protest of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. In Chicago, protesters linked arms and blocked lanes of Interstate 190 leading into O'Hare International Airport, causing significant delays for travelers. Similar demonstrations took place in California, New York, and the Pacific Northwest, with protesters shutting down the Golden Gate and Brooklyn bridges, as well as major highways in Oakland and Eugene, Oregon.

The protesters, who described their actions as part of a global "economic blockade to free Palestine," called for an immediate cease-fire in the war between Israel and Hamas. The Israeli offensive in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 33,700 Palestinians, with women and children making up two-thirds of the casualties, according to the Gaza health ministry. The protesters also criticized the US government for providing military aid to Israel.

In response to the protests, law enforcement officers made numerous arrests across the country. In California, around 20 protesters were arrested on the Golden Gate Bridge, while in Oregon, 52 people were arrested after blocking lanes of Interstate 5 near Eugene. Dozens of protesters were also arrested in Chicago and New York City, where demonstrators blocked traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge.

Despite the disruptions caused by the protests, operations at the airports affected appeared to be near normal, with delays of under 15 minutes reported at O'Hare International Airport. President Joe Biden, addressing the situation, said he remains focused on Israel's security, reaching a ceasefire in Gaza, freeing hostages taken by Hamas, and preventing the conflict from spreading further.

Overall, more than 150 people were arrested or taken into custody as a result of the protests, which highlighted the deep divisions and passionate emotions surrounding the conflict in the Middle East. As travelers navigated around the demonstrations to catch their flights, the protests served as a stark reminder of the ongoing violence and suffering in Gaza.
