After raid on fundraiser's home, NYC mayor says he has no knowledge of 'foreign money' in campaign

00:14 04.11.2023

New York City Mayor Eric Adams faced scrutiny and denied any involvement in illegal political fundraising after federal agents raided the home of one of his chief fundraisers, Brianna Suggs. The mayor's campaign pledged to review its books in response to the raid. Adams expressed outrage and anger at the possibility of his campaign being manipulated for fraudulent purposes and emphasized his lack of knowledge regarding any improper fundraising activities or foreign money.

The investigation was reportedly focused on whether the Adams campaign conspired with the Turkish government to receive donations from foreigners, which is prohibited by law. The U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan declined to comment on the investigation, but The New York Times obtained a search warrant that revealed authorities were examining contributions, travel to Turkey by individuals linked to the campaign, and interactions between the campaign and the Turkish government or its representatives.

The warrant also sought information related to KSK Construction Group, a Brooklyn company, and a small university in Washington, D.C., tied to the Turkish government. Campaign records showed that 11 individuals employed by KSK Construction had contributed over $13,000 to Adams during a fundraiser in May 2021. Several of these contributors declined to comment when contacted by phone, with some stating they were advised against speaking publicly. One donor mentioned being contacted by federal authorities.

Adams has long touted his connections to Turkey, having visited the country multiple times during his tenure as a state senator and Brooklyn borough president. On his return from a 2015 trip, he claimed to have advanced relations in commerce, culture, and safety. The federal inquiry concerning his campaign's ties to Turkey adds to the ongoing investigations into the mayor's inner circle and their connections to New York's real estate sector.

Earlier investigations revealed links between Adams' associates and the city's real estate sector. In September, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged Eric Ulrich, who was the city's top building-safety official under Adams, with accepting bribes in exchange for political favors. This included expediting inspections and attempting to vacate a low-income apartment at the request of a luxury developer. Additionally, six individuals, including four construction officials and a former NYPD commander who had a longstanding relationship with the mayor, were charged in an alleged straw donor conspiracy to divert funds to Adams' mayoral campaign prior to his election.

Although Adams has not been directly implicated in either of these cases, political observers believe that the current federal investigation into his fundraising team's top ranks may be harder to dismiss. Carrie Cohen, a former federal prosecutor in Manhattan, noted that it is sometimes challenging to determine whether conduct that may appear unethical rises to the level of criminal charges. However, she emphasized the concern that arises when the Department of Justice investigates any aspect of a campaign.
