High school students accused of creating AI-generated porn using classmates images

01:47 05.11.2023

A parent and student at Westfield High School in New Jersey recently spoke out on "The Ingraham Angle" about the circulation of artificial-intelligence-generated nude photos with superimposed faces of female students. Francesca Mani, one of the victims, expressed her feelings of betrayal after being informed by the principal about her involvement. She shared her frustration, stating that she never expected it to be one of her classmates. Mani disclosed that she believes she knows who the main culprit is but did not reveal their name on air. Her mother, Dorota Mani, expressed dissatisfaction with the school\'s response, claiming that they did not act urgently enough to find the culprit or take the situation seriously.

Dorota Mani highlighted that while the school assured them that the images had been deleted and not to worry because it was "just a Snapchat," she understood that a digital footprint still exists somewhere in the cyber world. Determined to find the source and bring the images back, she condemned the way Westfield High School handled the situation for all the affected girls. The district, in response to inquiries from FOX News, stated that they are unable to provide specific details about the number of students involved or disciplinary actions due to confidentiality. They confirmed that the incident occurred over the summer but was only brought to the administration\'s attention on October 20.

Principal Mary Asfendis sent an email to parents on the same day, addressing the seriousness of the incident and assuring them that the images had allegedly been deleted. She encouraged parents to join forces with the school in educating their children about responsible technology use. However, Dorota Mani criticized the school\'s posture, stating that it seemed as though they were simply trying to distance themselves from any liability, emphasizing that the larger issue at hand is the increase in cyberbullying nationwide. She also expressed the collective sentiment of the victimized girls, feeling traumatized and betrayed while believing that their voices were not being heard.

In response to the incident, Westfield Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Raymond Gonzalez issued a statement, acknowledging that all school districts are grappling with the challenges and impact of artificial intelligence and other technologies. He assured that the Westfield Public School District has safeguards in place to prevent similar incidents on their network and school-issued devices. Dr. Gonzalez added that they are continually strengthening their efforts by educating students and establishing clear guidelines to ensure responsible use of technology both within and beyond the school.

The report also includes the account of another parent, Dorota Mani, who expressed concern about the potential impact of artificial intelligence on children even before her daughter became a victim. She emphasized the urgency of addressing this "AI pandemic" and her daughter\'s determination to advocate for laws that protect people from deepfakes. The report mentions that Congress is considering a bill introduced by Rep. Joe Morelle to make it illegal to share nonconsensual deepfake images online.

According to CBS New York, parents received an email from the principal, alerting them to the situation and assuring them that an investigation was underway. The email conveyed the principal\'s concern over the creation of pornographic images using artificial intelligence and the subsequent worries among the student body. The district claims that any created images have been deleted and are no longer being circulated. Counseling services were made available to all affected students, and the school resource officer and Westfield PD were informed of the investigation. The district spokesperson declined to comment on the number of students involved or any disciplinary actions taken.

The incident has left many girls at Westfield High School traumatized, with some victims and their friends seen crying in the hallways. The Mani family intends to raise awareness about deepfakes and work towards proactive measures to protect people from such incidents. While the police have not provided any comment, the family has filed a police report. The report concludes by highlighting the importance of educating children about responsible technology use and the need for parents and schools to address the issue before it leads to further harm.
