Donald Trump set to testify in high-stakes New York fraud trial

13:19 06.11.2023

In a New York courtroom on Monday, former President Donald Trump took the witness stand in a $250 million civil fraud trial that threatens his real estate empire. Judge Arthur Engoron, visibly frustrated by Trump's extended answers, ordered his lawyer to "control your client" during the testimony. Engoron emphasized that the courtroom was not a political rally, urging the defense attorney to rein in Trump's rambling and defiant performance. The judge warned that if the lawyer couldn't control Trump, he would intervene himself.

During his testimony, Trump vehemently denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the legal cases against him were part of a campaign by Trump haters to undermine him. He admitted that his company provided inaccurate estimates of his properties' values but downplayed their significance. State lawyers argue that the inflated estimates misled lenders and insurers, resulting in $100 million in earnings for Trump and an overinflated wealth of $2 billion. Engoron has already ruled these estimates to be fraudulent.

Throughout the trial, Trump has accused Judge Engoron and New York Attorney General Letitia James of being politically biased against him. He claimed that they were paying undue attention to his business after his election as president in 2016. Trump expressed pessimism about the trial's outcome, believing that Engoron would rule against him as he always has. He labeled the trial as "very unfair" and a "witch hunt."

The civil fraud case, unlike criminal cases Trump faces, does not carry the threat of imprisonment. However, if the prosecution succeeds, it could undermine Trump's image as a wealthy and successful businessman. Attorney General James is seeking a $250 million fine and restrictions that would prevent Trump and his sons, Eric and Donald Jr., from doing business in New York.

Trump has used the trial to solicit campaign donations and argue that he is being targeted for his political views. He has faced fines for violating a limited gag order that prevents him from criticizing court staff. Trump's legal team has indicated their intention to appeal the order.

The trial, originally scheduled to run through early December, may conclude sooner as the state calls its final witnesses this week. Trump's daughter Ivanka is also expected to testify, although she is not a defendant in the case. The outcome of the trial could have significant implications for Trump's real estate empire and his future political ambitions.
