Jan. 6 Capitol Assault Fugitive Surrenders to Authorities in New Jersey

13:59 10.11.2023

In a dramatic turn of events, Gregory Yetman, the suspect in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, has surrendered to police in Monroe Township, New Jersey. The surrender took place on Friday morning without incident, according to Amy Thoreson, a spokesperson for the Newark FBI office. Yetman, 47, had fled from his home earlier this week when FBI agents arrived to arrest him.

Monroe Township, where Yetman turned himself in, is located near his home in Helmetta, a small town in central New Jersey. The town is approximately 43 miles south of New York City. Details surrounding his surrender, including whether he had legal representation, have not been disclosed. Attempts to contact Yetman for comment were unsuccessful.

Yetman faces multiple charges related to the Capitol attack, including assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers, obstruction of law enforcement during civil disorder, entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds, engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds, and committing an act of physical violence in the Capitol grounds or buildings. The FBI had previously interviewed Yetman about his alleged participation in the riot, and he was suspected of firing pepper spray at protesters and police officers. Yetman vehemently denies these allegations and maintains that he did nothing wrong during the events at the Capitol.

The news of Yetman's surrender comes amidst ongoing efforts to bring justice to those involved in the January 6 attack. To date, approximately 1,200 individuals have been charged with federal crimes related to the Capitol riot. Of these, over 800 have pleaded guilty or been convicted. More than 700 individuals have been sentenced, with the majority receiving prison terms ranging from three days to 22 years.

In the days leading up to Yetman's surrender, authorities conducted an intense manhunt in a central New Jersey neighborhood. The FBI, along with other law enforcement agencies, were actively searching for Yetman, who was described as "wanted in connection with the January 6th attack on the US Capitol." The search efforts centered around Helmetta, with the FBI establishing a command operation at the local community center. Law enforcement officers from various agencies, including state, county, and local police, joined the search.

Helmetta's mayor, Christopher Slavicek, spoke about the heightened sense of anxiety in the community as the search unfolded. He recounted how the search began on Wednesday morning when FBI agents arrived to arrest Yetman. According to Slavicek, Yetman fled into the woods, prompting the extensive search efforts. The presence of search helicopters and law enforcement vehicles added to the tense atmosphere in and around Helmetta.

Yetman's surrender brings an end to the FBI's manhunt for this particular suspect. Yet, the search for justice and accountability in relation to the January 6 attack continues. As the legal proceedings progress and more individuals are held accountable for their actions, the nation remains focused on ensuring that such events never recur.
