Circus Animals Escape Fiery Truck on Indiana Highway

14:42 29.01.2024

In a bizarre turn of events, a truck carrying zebras, camels, and a miniature horse for a weekend circus performance went up in flames on a highway in Indiana early Saturday morning. The incident occurred on Interstate 69 in Grant County, approximately 60 miles northeast of Indianapolis. The trailer, loaded with the exotic animals, caught fire around 2 a.m., creating a chaotic scene that required immediate intervention from emergency services.

Fortunately, two state troopers who were patrolling the area spotted the inferno and quickly sprang into action to rescue the animals. Alongside a Grant County Sheriff's deputy, they led five zebras, four camels, and a miniature horse to safety, guiding them off the smoke-filled trailer. Astonishing footage captured by the Grant County Sheriff's Office shows the camels trotting across the highway as the trailer billows smoke in the background. The zebras, seemingly unfazed by the chaos, were seen munching on nearby grass as the red lights and sirens of emergency vehicles blared in the background.

Deputy Brent Ressett with the Grant County Sheriff's Office expressed his astonishment, stating, "It's not something we see every day." Both officers involved in the rescue were later treated for smoke inhalation at a local hospital and subsequently released. Miraculously, none of the animals suffered any injuries, bringing relief to all involved.

The truck, which was transporting the animals from Florida to Fort Wayne for four weekend circus performances in aid of the Mizpah Shrine Circus, was completely destroyed in the blaze. Steve Trump, the circus director, explained that the performances serve as annual fundraisers to support the upkeep of the Shrine Center in Fort Wayne, allowing them to allocate other funds towards their primary mission of caring for children.

The zebras and camels, having been saved from the fire, were temporarily corralled by police until another truck from the Shrine Circus arrived to transport them to Fort Wayne's Memorial Coliseum. There, they would await their roles in the weekend's circus performances. The miniature horse, displaying loyalty and resilience, did not stray far from the scene of the incident, making it easy for officials to account for all the animals.

Authorities closed all northbound lanes of I-69 until approximately 6:30 a.m. to clean up the area and ensure the safety of motorists. Fire crews worked diligently to extinguish the flames in the trailer, while law enforcement officers attended to the well-being of the rescued animals. The cause of the fire was attributed to equipment failure, according to fire officials.

Despite the chaotic and unpredictable nature of the incident, the successful rescue of the exotic animals brought a sense of relief to everyone involved. The images and videos shared on social media captured the surreal and awe-inspiring sight of zebras grazing by the side of the road, camels standing alongside law enforcement officers, and a miniature horse remaining close to the scene. The incident serves as a reminder of the dedication and bravery displayed by emergency services and the importance of quick thinking in unexpected situations.
