In a tragic incident that occurred early Saturday morning, former NFL cornerback D.J. Hayden was among the six individuals who lost their lives in a car crash in Houston, according to the University of Houston. The Houston Police Department confirmed the fatal accident during a news briefing, stating that five of the victims were males and one was identified as Megan Howard, a female. At the time of the briefing, the police did not release the names of the victims.

The University of Houston Athletics also released a statement expressing their condolences and confirming that Hayden, along with Ralph Oragwu and Zach McMillian, both former University of Houston football players, were among the victims of the crash. The university praised their contributions both on and off the field, highlighting their love for their teammates, support for their communities, and ability to overcome challenges.

Reports indicate that the Houston police received multiple 911 calls around 2 a.m., alerting them to a major car crash involving two vehicles, a black Chrysler 300 and a black Acura SUV. Assistant Chief Megan Howard revealed at the briefing that one of the vehicles was traveling at a high speed and ran a red light, resulting in a collision. The driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, which also claimed the lives of four other individuals, including a homeless man. Four additional individuals were transported to local hospitals, with two more succumbing to their injuries upon arrival. One female patient remains in critical condition.

While the investigation is ongoing, authorities are questioning a male patient at the hospital for more information about the crash. D.J. Hayden, aged 33, played for various NFL teams during his career, including the Oakland Raiders, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Washington Commanders. He first gained attention in the sports world over a decade ago when he survived a life-threatening heart injury during a practice session at the University of Houston. Despite this setback, he was drafted as the 12th overall pick by the Raiders in the 2013 NFL Draft.

The Raiders released a statement expressing their grief over the tragic loss of their former cornerback, highlighting Hayden's courage, perseverance, and dedication to his teammates. The team extended their prayers to Hayden's loved ones in this difficult time. Ralph Oragwu, a former Cougars offensive lineman who played for the University of Houston from 2009 to 2013, also lost his life in the crash.

Zach McMillian, another former University of Houston football player, was also fatally injured in the accident. McMillian, who played at Houston from 2010 to 2013, received recognition as an All-American Athletic Conference second-team player. The University of Houston released a statement expressing their deep sorrow over the passing of these former student-athletes and offering their thoughts and prayers to the injured individual, Jeffery Lewis.

Hayden's NFL career spanned nine years, during which he played for the Raiders, Lions, and Jaguars. He also spent time on Washington's practice squad in 2021. Throughout his career, Hayden accumulated 4.5 sacks and four interceptions, leaving a lasting impact on the football community.

As the investigation into the car crash continues, the entire Houston community mourns the loss of these individuals who made a significant impact on and off the field. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of unity during difficult times.
