Suspicious letter forces evacuation of Kansas secretary of state's building

21:53 14.11.2023

The office of Kansas' top elections official was evacuated on Tuesday after receiving suspicious mail, causing concern amid recent similar incidents targeting election offices in multiple states. Just last week, election offices in at least five states received threatening mail, some containing the potentially dangerous opioid fentanyl. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has taken the lead in the case, working in collaboration with the Kansas Highway Patrol, the state fire marshal's office, and the state Department of Health and Environment.

Melissa Underwood, a spokesperson for the KBI, stated in an email that the mail sent to the Kansas secretary of state's office prompted the evacuation of the building, which also houses the Kansas attorney general's office, "out of an abundance of caution." Underwood did not provide specific details regarding the contents of the mail. However, she confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and as of now, this is the only incident reported in Kansas.

Local television station WIBW reported that hazardous materials teams from the Topeka Fire Department entered the building shortly after the evacuation. These teams were later seen leaving in the afternoon, indicating that no immediate danger was detected.

This incident follows a series of threatening letters containing white powder that were sent to dozens of Republican officials in Kansas, Montana, and Tennessee back in June. Although the tests conducted on these letters did not reveal any toxins, the motives behind the threats remain unclear, and no arrests have been made.

Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab, a Republican who has been vocal in debunking baseless theories about the 2020 election being stolen, did not disclose the nature of the suspicious substance contained in the letter received on Tuesday. However, he emphasized the seriousness of such incidents, stating that his team is trained to report anything suspicious.

With concerns about the security and integrity of the electoral process still prevalent after the highly contested 2020 election, the targeting of election offices in multiple states raises questions about the motives and potential threats faced by officials involved in overseeing elections. Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify those responsible and ensure the safety of election officials in Kansas and across the country.
