8 Teens Arrested for Fatal Beating of Las Vegas High School Student

00:41 15.11.2023

In a shocking turn of events, eight high school students in Las Vegas, aged between 13 and 17, have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the fatal beating of a 17-year-old classmate. The arrest was announced on Tuesday at a press conference held by Las Vegas police homicide Lt. Jason Johansson. According to Johansson, investigators are still working to identify two more students believed to have participated in the fight that took place on November 1st. The altercation allegedly stemmed from a dispute over a pair of wireless headphones and a vape pen.

The victim, identified as Jonathan Lewis Jr., was left with severe head trauma and other injuries after the fight and remained hospitalized until his death approximately a week later. The coroner's office in Las Vegas has ruled the beating a homicide. The brutal attack was captured on video and has been circulated on social media, leading to widespread outrage within the community. Las Vegas Undersheriff Andrew Walsh described the footage as "extremely disturbing" and urged anyone who may have recognized the perpetrators to come forward.

The arrests were made with the assistance of the local FBI office on Tuesday morning. However, the two outstanding students, who are believed to have been involved in the fight, will also face murder charges. Authorities did not release the names of the suspects due to their status as juveniles. Johansson revealed that he and his team are consulting with the local district attorney's office to determine if the suspects will be charged as adults.

According to Johansson, the fight had been prearranged after the stolen headphones and vape pen were taken from the victim's friend. Although the victim was not initially intended to be involved in the altercation, he accompanied his friend to a nearby alleyway where the brawl was scheduled to take place after school hours. In the alley, the 10 students quickly overwhelmed Lewis, pulling him to the ground and subjecting him to a vicious assault consisting of punches, kicks, and stomping. The aftermath of the fight saw a passerby discovering the badly beaten and unconscious victim, who was then carried back to the school campus, where staff promptly contacted emergency services.

In light of these events, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officials have expressed their determination to charge qualified suspects as adults. The suspects range in age from 13 to 17 and were booked on suspicion of murder. Family members of the victim informed the police that Lewis was declared brain-dead on November 7th at a hospital, prompting them to make the decision to donate his organs. The Clark County medical examiner's office confirmed that the cause of Lewis' death was blunt force trauma, ruling it a homicide.

The arrests of the eight suspects were made on Tuesday morning, thanks to the assistance of FBI agents. However, at least two other individuals believed to have been involved in the attack have yet to be identified. In hopes of obtaining more information, the police department plans to circulate video footage of the two individuals in question and implores anyone who recognizes them to come forward. The motive behind the attack appears to revolve around the stolen headphones and a possible stolen marijuana vape pen that belonged to either Lewis or his friend. Undersheriff Walsh emphasized the gravity of the suspects' actions, stating that they will have "life-altering consequences.".
