Derek Chauvin, Ex-Cop Convicted in George Floyd Murder, Stabbed in Prison: Report

22:47 24.11.2023

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted of the murder of George Floyd, has been stabbed by another inmate while in prison in Arizona, according to the Associated Press. The incident occurred at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Tucson on Friday afternoon. The Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate had been assaulted and stated that prison staff immediately performed life-saving measures before the injured inmate was transferred to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

The attack on Chauvin, 47, comes after his high-profile trial and subsequent conviction for the second-degree murder of George Floyd. Chauvin was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder and an additional 21-year sentence for violating Floyd's civil rights. George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died in May 2020 after Chauvin knelt on his neck for over nine minutes during an arrest. The incident, which was captured on video by a bystander, ignited widespread protests against police brutality and systemic racism.

The FBI has been made aware of the assault at the prison, although no specific details about the incident or the individuals involved have been disclosed. Chauvin's defense team and the FBI have not yet commented on the reported stabbing. Chauvin is currently serving his sentence at FCI Tucson, where he was transferred from a maximum-security prison in Minnesota in August 2022.

This is not the first time a high-profile inmate has been attacked at FCI Tucson. In November 2022, an inmate at the low-security prison camp attempted to shoot a visitor in the head with a gun. The weapon misfired, and no one was injured in the incident. The prison has also been plagued by security lapses and staffing shortages.

Chauvin's stabbing raises concerns about the safety of inmates and the effectiveness of security measures within the federal prison system. It also highlights the ongoing scrutiny faced by the Bureau of Prisons following the high-profile suicide of financier Jeffrey Epstein in 2019.

As Chauvin recovers from his injuries, his legal team continues to pursue various avenues for appealing his convictions. Chauvin is seeking to overturn his guilty plea in the federal civil rights case, claiming that new evidence proves he did not cause Floyd's death. Last week, the US Supreme Court rejected Chauvin's appeal against his state murder conviction. The outcome of these appeals will have significant implications for Chauvin's future and the broader conversation surrounding police accountability and racial justice in the United States.
