12:35 28.11.2023

A tragic incident unfolded at Southeast Raleigh High School in North Carolina on Monday morning, leaving one student dead and another hospitalized. The incident occurred during a fight in the gym and was captured on video. According to CBS affiliate WNCN-TV, the fight escalated quickly, with students throwing punches and chaos ensuing. In the midst of the brawl, a 14-year-old student allegedly pulled out a knife and attacked two of his classmates.

Raleigh police were alerted to the stabbing around 11 a.m. and immediately responded to the scene along with school security. The two injured students, a 15-year-old who tragically lost his life and a 16-year-old who sustained non-life-threatening injuries, were rushed to a local hospital. The identity of the deceased student has not been released, and authorities are still working to notify his family.

The 14-year-old suspect was quickly apprehended and charged with murder on a juvenile petition, according to Raleigh police spokesperson Lt. Jason Borneo. It remains unclear if the suspect attended Southeast Raleigh High School. The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement collaborating with Wake County Public School officials to gather more information about the incident.

Parents anxiously gathered outside the school as news of the stabbing spread. The campus was put on lockdown following the incident, heightening concerns over the safety of their children. Eleventh grader Aniyah Bellamy expressed her shock and devastation, emphasizing that schools should be safe places for students. The tragedy has left many students feeling uneasy, with Bellamy sharing her concerns about the days that follow.

In response to the incident, Wake County Superintendent Robert Taylor held a press conference, expressing his condolences to the affected families and pledging to review all safety processes and protocols. He acknowledged the distressing nature of receiving the news of a child's death while at school, stating that he couldn't imagine the pain it would cause parents.

As a result of the incident, Southeast Raleigh High School announced that it would be closed on Tuesday to allow students and staff time to process their emotions. The district will also conduct a thorough review of safety measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The disturbing and tragic nature of this event has shaken the community, leaving many questioning how such violence could occur within the confines of an educational institution. The footage captured during the fight serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can manifest within school environments.

The identity of the victims and the suspect have not been released to the public. However, the mother of the alleged stabber, Sherelle McLaughlin, came forward to defend her son, claiming that he was only defending himself. She denied that he brought the knife to school and suggested that he obtained it from someone else within the building. McLaughlin expressed sympathy for the victim's family while also expressing concern for her own son's well-being.

As the community mourns the loss of a young life and grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, Raleigh police issued a statement, urging everyone to come together and support those affected. The healing process will undoubtedly be challenging, but the community's resilience will be crucial in moving forward.
