Missing NYC woman found dead in garbage chute, father speaks out

05:09 04.12.2023

A young woman's mysterious death in a posh Manhattan building has left her father devastated and the community in shock. Jaclyn Jackie Elmquist, a 24-year-old woman from Minnesota, was found dead in the garbage chute of +Art at 540 West 28th Street in Chelsea on Friday afternoon. Her body was discovered several hours after she went missing following a work party.

Outside Elmquist's Brooklyn apartment, her grief-stricken father, James Elmquist, expressed his devastation. "We're going through Jackie's things now," he told The Post. Overwhelmed with emotion, he struggled to find words, eventually becoming too choked up to speak. The tragic accident has left the family in a state of shock and disbelief.

Authorities believe that Elmquist's death was an accident and have ruled out foul play. Video footage from outside the building showed Elmquist walking unsteadily down the sidewalk before entering the building. At one point, she even leaned against a wall for support, suggesting the possibility of intoxication. However, it has not been confirmed if she was indeed under the influence.

Elmquist worked at Mission Staffing, an employment agency in New York City. Her cousin, who goes by the online name @katlynkampmeier, posted on X that Elmquist had been at a company party before she disappeared. The reason for her entering the building where she was later found remains unclear.

The tragic news has spread throughout the community, and neighbors and friends are grappling with the loss. The superintendent of Elmquist's Brooklyn building, Davidson Stewart, was visibly shaken upon learning of her death. He described Elmquist as friendly and someone who kept to herself. A close friend of Elmquist, who chose to remain anonymous, tearfully expressed her devastation and mentioned that she was on her way to the NYPD's 10th Precinct in Manhattan.

Elmquist's grandfather, John Elmquist, spoke to The Post and revealed that Jaclyn's father and sister, Madalyn, were in New York but had little information about her death. They are anxiously waiting for updates. The family is at a loss for words and struggling to come to terms with this devastating loss.

This tragic incident brings to mind the death of Lara Prychodko in July 2018. Prychodko was found in the basement of her luxury Union Square building after falling down the trash chute. While no criminality was suspected in her case, her father, Nicholas Prychodko, has persistently claimed that she was murdered.

The cause and manner of Jaclyn Elmquist's death are pending an autopsy by the city Medical Examiner's office. As the investigation unfolds, the community mourns the loss of a young life and hopes for answers to provide closure for Elmquist's family and friends.
