Patrick McHenry, US House Republican, announces he won't seek re-election

21:07 05.12.2023

In a surprising announcement, U.S. Representative Patrick McHenry of North Carolina revealed on Tuesday that he will not seek re-election in 2024, becoming the 37th member of Congress to make such a decision. McHenry, a Republican and a close ally of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, stated that he believes "there is a season for everything" and that his time in Congress has come to an end. He expressed his pride in serving in the House of Representatives, referring to it as "the center of our American republic" and highlighting its significance in shaping the nation's future.

McHenry's departure adds to the growing list of legislators who have chosen not to seek re-election, leaving a significant number of seats without incumbent protection in the upcoming election. Among the 37 members of Congress who will not be seeking re-election, there are seven senators and 30 representatives. This has raised concerns about the future of the institution, but McHenry believes that the House is on the verge of a turning point, emphasizing that new leaders will emerge and guide the institution through its evolution.

The departures come at a challenging time for the Republican Party, which has faced disappointing performances in recent years and internal conflicts. The party has been grappling with the aftermath of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, and Democrats in Virginia successfully made blocking the GOP's proposed abortion limit a key issue in the statehouse elections. The GOP has also been plagued with in-fighting, as seen by the rebellion against McCarthy and the subsequent struggle to select a new speaker. Additionally, the House voted to expel Representative George Santos of New York over extensive ethics accusations.

While the Republican Party faces these challenges, the Democratic Party is not without its own divisions. In the wake of the Hamas attack on Israel, progressive members of the party have revolted against the traditional pro-Israel stance, threatening to withhold support from candidates who support the Jewish State. These intraparty divisions have complicated the political landscape for both parties.

According to the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, there are five open House seats that are projected to be possible Democrat pickup opportunities, while none are listed for the GOP. Despite the GOP's approval rating of 30% and Democrats' disapproval rating of 66%, as shown in a recent Fox News poll, both parties are facing challenges as they navigate the upcoming election.

As McHenry prepares to leave Congress, his decision marks another significant departure in a year filled with announcements of incumbents not seeking re-election. The changing landscape of Congress raises questions about the future of the institution and the direction of the country. With a wave of new leaders set to emerge, the upcoming election will undoubtedly shape the course of American politics.
