Cousins attacked in NYC by for-hire driver, one killed

09:49 09.12.2023

A car service driver has been arrested by the NYPD and charged with manslaughter and assault following a brutal attack in Brooklyn on December 7th. Sergio Zamora-Mendoza, 33, allegedly beat a man to death and severely injured his cousin during the incident. The attack took place after Zamora-Mendoza dropped off the victims, Carlos Guaman, 66, and his 52-year-old cousin, on West 9th Street near Avenue T in Gravesend at around 4:40 a.m. An argument between Zamora-Mendoza and the cousins escalated into violence, with Zamora-Mendoza exiting the vehicle and repeatedly punching both men in the head. After the attack, Zamora-Mendoza fled the scene, leaving both victims unconscious with head trauma.

Police arrived at the scene to find the cousins in critical condition and rushed them to Maimonides Medical Center. Unfortunately, Guaman was pronounced dead, while his cousin remains in critical but stable condition. It is unclear what sparked the initial argument, as the younger cousin stated that he does not remember what happened due to his intoxication at the time. The attack was captured on a doorbell camera, providing evidence for the investigation.

Residents of the quiet neighborhood were shocked by the violent incident. A local resident, who has lived in the neighborhood for almost nine years, expressed their disbelief, stating that such an occurrence had never happened before. The resident also mentioned the timing of the attack, so close to Christmas, adding to the tragedy of the situation.

The arrest of Zamora-Mendoza brings some relief to the community, but the disturbing nature of the attack has left neighbors shaken. The violence has raised concerns about the safety of the neighborhood and the impact it has on the victims' families. One resident expressed their sadness for the family, emphasizing the need for empathy and condemning the actions of the perpetrator as animalistic. The community is left mourning the loss of Carlos Guaman and hoping for the recovery of his cousin.
