US Air Force moves to discipline 15 personnel related to leak case

16:11 11.12.2023

In a recent development, the United States Air Force has taken action against 15 personnel in response to the leaking of classified military information. The alleged culprit behind the leak, Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira, is said to have acted alone in leaking the classified documents. However, the Air Force Inspector General's investigation revealed various factors that facilitated the leak. These factors include a failure of Teixeira's unit to take appropriate action after becoming aware of his intelligence-seeking activities, inconsistent guidance for reporting security incidents, inadequate inspection of areas under command, inconsistent definitions of the "need to know" concept, and a lack of supervision and oversight during night shift operations.

Teixeira, a 21-year-old member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, is suspected of leaking the classified Pentagon documents on Discord, a popular social media platform primarily used by online gamers. In June, he was indicted on six federal counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information and pleaded not guilty.

The Air Force's investigation found no evidence that Teixeira's supervisory chain was aware of the alleged leaks. However, it did point out that his unit's leadership within the 102nd Intelligence Wing failed to remain vigilant in overseeing the conduct of its members and did not prioritize mission security. Consequently, disciplinary and administrative actions have been taken against 15 individuals, including the relief of personnel from their positions, including command positions, as well as non-judicial punishment under Article 15 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Furthermore, the military has permanently removed previously suspended commanders and reassigned the mission of the 102nd Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group to other organizations within the Air Force. The group's mission was temporarily suspended upon the discovery of Teixeira as the source of the unauthorized disclosures.

The leaking of classified military information through gaming platforms is considered a highly serious national security breach. Prosecutors have likened this incident to the infamous WikiLeaks case of 2010 when over 700,000 classified documents, videos, and diplomatic cables were published on the WikiLeaks website.

In response to this incident, the Air Force has implemented reforms regarding the "need to know" concept and classified access. Additionally, measures have been taken to improve accountability for the protection of classified and sensitive information.

This is an ongoing story, and updates will be provided.
