Unconnected Man Charged in Stabbing Death of Nebraska Priest

18:09 14.12.2023

A Catholic priest in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, was tragically stabbed to death in his own rectory last week, and prosecutors revealed during a court hearing on Thursday that the suspect had no connection to either the priest or the small town. Kierre Williams, a 43-year-old man, was ordered to be held without bond while he awaits trial on charges of first-degree murder, burglary, and two felony weapons counts. The suspect was found at the scene of the crime, lying on top of the bleeding priest when the authorities arrived.

The incident occurred on Sunday, when the 65-year-old Rev. Stephen Gutgsell bravely called 911 before dawn to report that an unknown man had broken into the rectory and was holding a knife in the kitchen. Deputy Brady Tucker arrived at the scene just minutes later and discovered Gutgsell lying near the kitchen, suffering from severe stab wounds. The wounded priest was immediately rushed to a hospital in Omaha, but sadly, he succumbed to his injuries.

During the court hearing, the judge noted that the murder charge alone carries a possible death sentence. This revelation seemed to surprise Williams, who appeared in the video conference wearing an orange jumpsuit. He claimed that his lawyer had informed him that he would face a life sentence if convicted. County Attorney Scott VanderSchaaf confirmed after the hearing that the case is indeed eligible for the death penalty, but a decision on whether to seek execution will be made closer to the trial date.

The small town of Fort Calhoun, with its population of about 1,000 people, has now experienced two killings this year, both seemingly unrelated home invasions. Williams, however, lived 75 miles away from the town in Sioux City, Nebraska. Local authorities discovered that he was a convicted felon with multiple warrants against him in other states, suggesting a history of criminal activity. Williams' criminal record includes numerous cases in Florida dating back to his teenage years, a drug possession conviction in Texas, and an assault charge earlier this year in Sioux City, Iowa.

According to an affidavit, it was revealed during the hearing that the killing of Father Gutgsell was premeditated and deliberate, occurring during the course of a burglary. The murder weapon was found nearby in a separate bedroom, further supporting the notion that the suspect had planned the attack. The investigation is still ongoing, and authorities are working to gather more information in this tragic case.
