Mule deer attack leaves Colorado woman with horrific puncture wound

06:10 18.12.2023

In a shocking incident that has left the community of Silver Cliff, Colorado, reeling, a 67-year-old woman was viciously attacked by a small mule deer buck outside her home on Saturday evening. According to officials from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), the woman suffered a puncture wound to her left leg and significant bruising on her right leg during the horrifying encounter.

The attack took place right in front of the victim's own door, a place that should have been safe and secure. The mule deer buck, armed with two spikes on each antler, pounced on the woman with aggressive force, leaving her with a deep puncture wound and horrifying bruises. Miraculously, she managed to scramble back inside her home and alert her husband, who quickly called for help.

CPW immediately launched a search operation to locate the dangerous animal responsible for the attack. If found, the buck will be euthanized to ensure the safety of the community. Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and report any sightings of the deer.

Eyewitnesses reported that following the brutal assault, they observed two young bucks engaging in sparring behavior in the woman's yard. This is a common occurrence during mating season, indicating that the attack may have been triggered by territorial or mating instincts. However, the presence of a bird feeder on the victim's property has raised suspicions that the deer may have been attracted to the location due to the presence of food.

Mike Brown, CPW Area Wildlife Manager for the region, expressed concern about the incident, stating, "I believe this is a good example of what happens when deer lose their natural fear of humans. They become aggressive and dangerous." Brown emphasized the importance of treating wild animals with caution and giving them the space they need.

Authorities are alarmed by the attack taking place in such close proximity to the victim's home, leading them to suspect that someone may have been feeding the deer, causing it to lose its natural fear of humans. Feeding wildlife not only disrupts their natural behavior but also endangers both humans and animals involved. CPW is urging residents to refrain from feeding wild animals and to keep their distance for everyone's safety.

"We're glad this woman wasn't more seriously injured," Brown emphasized, highlighting the potentially devastating consequences of such encounters. The victim was promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and is expected to recover from her injuries.

This incident has sent shockwaves through the small town of Silver Cliff, which is home to just 600 residents. Located approximately 50 miles from Pueblo, the community is now on high alert and taking precautions to prevent further wildlife conflicts. Authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety of the residents and restore a sense of security in the area.
