Liz Cheney: Equal Criticism for Trump and Biden, Warns of Darker Chapters

02:51 19.12.2023

Former Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney has rejected claims that she is showing a double standard in her critiques of former President Trump and President Biden. Speaking out on Monday, the anti-Trump Republican issued a warning about the potential consequences of Trump being reelected, stating that he would not surround himself with moderating voices and advisors as he did in his first term. Instead, she believes he would employ sycophants who would blindly support his agenda. Cheney expressed concern that some former aides, such as ex-Rep. Mark Meadows, would testify as witnesses in Trump's upcoming Atlanta trial, highlighting the absence of people who previously advised Trump to tell the mob to go home on January 6th and informed him of the illegality of his actions. She also raised concerns about Trump potentially refusing to enforce countervailing court rulings, emphasizing the importance of court rulings as a safeguard for the republic.

Cheney recently released a memoir titled "Oath & Honor," in which she wrote that the story of January 6th may be far from over. She warned that there may be darker chapters ahead for the nation. During an appearance on "Special Report," Cheney reiterated her concerns about Trump's potential second term, stating that he had already signaled his disregard for the Constitution by trying to "seize power" after the 2020 election. She also criticized his tendency to surround himself with "unethical lawyers." Anchor Bret Baier referenced a Wall Street Journal op-ed that argued Biden had done exactly what Trump's critics feared he would do if he returned to the White House. Baier listed multiple areas in which Biden and his administration have faced criticism for potential overreach, such as student loan eradication, COVID orders, vaccine mandates, and restrictions on domestic energy production.

Cheney disputed the notion that she has been silent on these issues, particularly citing her vocal opposition to Biden's energy policies, which directly impact her home state of Wyoming. She stressed that while she disagreed with Biden's policies, they were fundamentally different from the actions of a president like Trump. Cheney invoked the peaceful transition of power, a tradition upheld by every president since George Washington, as evidence of Trump's attempt to seize power and his disregard for democratic norms. She condemned Trump's attacks on former Vice President Mike Pence and argued that her criticisms of Trump were not based on political bias. Cheney pointed out that she had voted in line with Trump's political agenda 93% of the time and had defended him during controversies surrounding Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe. She urged voters to consider other candidates in the 2024 elections who support Trump-style policies but without the constitutional risks associated with Trump himself.

As the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, Liz Cheney emphasized that there are many candidates who share Trump's policy goals without jeopardizing the Constitution.
