Ravens' Mark Andrews Saves Woman's Life on Plane

06:42 02.02.2024

Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews has been hailed as a hero after coming to the aid of a woman experiencing a medical emergency on a Southwest Airlines flight from Baltimore to Phoenix. The incident, which took place on Thursday morning, was detailed in a viral post on social media by user Andrew Springs.

According to Springs' post, the woman on the flight had a mid-flight medical emergency, with medical personnel struggling to find a strong pulse and her blood pressure dropping dangerously low. As the situation grew increasingly alarming, a man in the aisle seat, later revealed to be Mark Andrews, stepped forward and suggested that the woman's condition could be related to her blood sugar levels. Andrews, who is a Type 1 diabetic, offered his diabetic testing kit to the medical professionals attending to the woman.

Andrews, a three-time Pro Bowler, instructed the medical professionals on how to use the testing kit, drawing on his own experience managing his blood sugar levels as a professional athlete. Eventually, the woman's heart rate stabilized, thanks to the quick thinking and assistance of Andrews and the medical personnel.

Witnesses on the flight were in awe of Andrews' selflessness and calm demeanor throughout the incident. Springs mentioned that Andrews left the plane quietly, without seeking any attention or recognition for his actions. He exemplified the true spirit of a hero, stepping up in a moment of crisis when people needed him most.

In a statement released through the Ravens, Andrews acknowledged the efforts of the flight attendants, nurse, and doctor who also played crucial roles in helping the woman. He expressed gratitude that they were able to provide the woman with the quick assistance she needed.

This act of heroism is not out of character for Andrews, who has faced his own health challenges as a Type 1 diabetic. In an interview with GQ, he shared his diagnosis at the age of 9 and how he has learned to approach each day with a positive mindset, focusing on what he can control rather than dwelling on the things he cannot change.

Despite suffering a left ankle injury late in the regular season, Andrews made a remarkable recovery and returned in time for the Ravens' AFC Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Although the Ravens fell short of reaching the Super Bowl, Andrews' determination and resilience both on and off the field continue to inspire others.

The incident on the Southwest Airlines flight serves as a reminder of the unsung heroes among us. Andrews' willingness to help a stranger in need, without seeking recognition or fanfare, showcases his exceptional character and quiet leadership. In a world where selflessness can sometimes be overshadowed, it is important to recognize and celebrate those who go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of others.
