Jets face Zach Wilson waiting game before declaring starting QB

15:04 20.12.2023

New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson remains in the concussion protocol after suffering a head injury during last week's game against the Miami Dolphins. Jets head coach Robert Saleh provided an update on Wilson's condition on Wednesday, stating that the team is taking a wait-and-see approach regarding his potential availability for Sunday's game against the Washington Commanders. Saleh emphasized that the decision will ultimately depend on Wilson's progress in the protocol, and the team will not close the door on his potential return just yet.

Wilson exited the game against the Dolphins before halftime due to the head injury and will need to go through several more steps in the concussion protocol before he can be considered eligible to play. One crucial step for his return would be to participate in practice at least in a limited capacity by Thursday. However, if Wilson fails to meet this requirement, his chances of playing on Sunday will decrease significantly.

The severity of Wilson's injury was brought to light by his mother, Lisa, who revealed in an Instagram post on Monday that Wilson did not inform the coaching staff or medical team about the extent of his symptoms until he experienced blurred vision and issues with depth perception. Saleh addressed this revelation, acknowledging that sometimes head injuries can go unnoticed on the field, which is why the NFL has spotters in place. However, he also emphasized the importance of players communicating their symptoms and encouraged them to prioritize their health.

Saleh expressed admiration for Wilson's competitiveness and resilience, commending the young quarterback for consistently returning to the huddle despite facing numerous hits and challenges. He expressed gratitude that the head injury was eventually spotted, allowing Wilson to receive the necessary care. If Wilson is unable to play, the Jets will turn to backup quarterback Trevor Siemian, who stepped in for Wilson during the Dolphins game.

The Jets organization is expected to make a final decision regarding the starting quarterback for the game against Washington later in the week. Wilson's participation hinges on successfully clearing all six steps of the concussion protocol, with two of those steps involving a return to limited practice and then full participation. If Wilson fails to participate in any capacity by Thursday, his chances of starting decrease significantly.

Following the Jets' disappointing 30-0 loss to the Dolphins, several players voiced their frustrations. Wide receiver Allen Lazard criticized the team, stating that they were "out-schemed and out-efforted," which raised concerns about the coaching staff. Saleh addressed these comments, acknowledging their validity and taking responsibility for the team's poor performance. He admitted that the coaching staff did not coach well enough and that the execution from all three phases of the game fell short. Saleh expressed the need for improvement from both coaches and players and acknowledged that the blame ultimately falls on him as the head coach.

When asked about his job security, Saleh remained focused on the upcoming game against Washington, stating that he is solely focused on coaching to win. He acknowledged the transient nature of coaching positions in the NFL and emphasized his commitment to the present moment and the team's pursuit of victory.

In addition to Wilson's injury, defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson suffered a hip injury during the game against the Dolphins. Saleh stated that it is unlikely Jefferson will be able to play in the upcoming game against Washington, further adding to the team's challenges.
