Military dog reunited with Air Force handler: A blessed reunion

07:40 24.12.2023

US Air Force Staff Sergeant Mike Alcala has been reunited with his beloved military working dog, John, just in time for the holidays. The pair had been separated for over two years, but thanks to the efforts of American Humane, they are now back together forever. The emotional reunion took place in San Antonio, Texas, where Alcala and his wife, Brittany, introduced their 10-month-old daughter, Avery, to their newest family member.

The bond between Alcala and John was formed during the three years they worked together, and it only grew stronger over time. When Alcala learned that John was retiring, he reached out to American Humane for assistance in bringing his best friend home for adoption. The nonprofit organization specializes in the complex logistics of transporting retired K-9 veterans to their former handlers. They handled all the paperwork, red tape, and associated costs, making it possible for Alcala and John to be reunited without any financial burden on the sergeant.

John, a 10-year-old German shepherd, served as an explosive-detection dog at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii for eight years. During his distinguished military career, he protected civilians, fellow service members, and even high-profile VIPs, including American presidents and foreign dignitaries. To honor his years of dedicated service, John was given a special retirement ceremony in Hawaii before being transported to San Antonio.

American Humane not only facilitated the reunion but also committed to covering all of John's veterinary care for the rest of his life. Like human veterans, K-9 veterans often retire with health complications that require expensive medical care not covered by the government. By taking on this responsibility, American Humane ensures that John will receive the necessary medical attention throughout his retirement.

The Alcala family couldn't be happier to have John back with them. During the emotional reunion, Avery expressed her excitement by waving her arms around, and her parents are looking forward to watching her grow up with John by her side. Mike Alcala expressed his gratitude for the support he received from American Humane, stating that he is "just so happy that John is doing well and that he now gets to live out his life relaxing in retirement."

Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane, emphasized the importance of recognizing the service and sacrifice of retired military working dogs. She stated, "We owe a debt of gratitude to all American veterans, including the retired military working dogs who serve our country." Bringing John home for the holidays was a meaningful way to honor both Alcala and his loyal canine companion.

This heartwarming reunion serves as a reminder of the incredible bond that can form between humans and animals, particularly in the context of military service. Alcala and John's story is a testament to the dedication and loyalty that these working dogs bring to their roles, as well as the profound impact they have on the lives of their handlers. As the Alcala family celebrates this memorable holiday gift, they can look forward to creating new memories with John as a cherished member of their household.
