A mother lost her wallet in the 1950s. 65 years later, a family is reconnecting with lost history

In a surprising turn of events, a wallet that had been lost since 1958 was recently discovered in an unexpected location - behind a bathroom wall in Atlanta's historic Plaza Theatre. The owner of the theater, Chris Escobar, described the finding as a "portal back in time" due to the wallet's contents and the glimpse it provided into the past.

Having encountered various relics of yesteryears during his time at the Plaza Theatre, such as vintage alcohol bottles and popcorn displays, Escobar was taken aback by the significance of this discovery. The wallet, buried in a pile of dust, contained black-and-white family photos, a raffle ticket for a 1959 Chevrolet, insurance cards, and even credit cards from now-defunct local department stores Davison's and Rich's. Receipts revealed that gas cost a mere $3.26 for 10 gallons back then. However, the most significant detail within the wallet was a license bearing the name Floy Culbreth.

Eager to reunite the wallet with its rightful owners, Escobar embarked on a mission to find the Culbreth family. Despite the challenge posed by the fact that women were often identified by their husband's names during that era, Escobar enlisted the help of his wife, Nicole, who he humorously referred to as an "internet sleuth." Nicole's online investigation led them to the obituary of Floy Culbreth's husband, Roy. This discovery set them on a path that eventually led to the couple's daughter, Thea Chamberlain, who lived just a short distance from the theater.

Chamberlain expressed her shock at the finding, explaining that her mother's tendency to misplace things during her lifetime made the loss of the wallet seem unsurprising. Describing her mother as a "spicy June Cleaver" - referencing the iconic TV character known for her charm and wit - Chamberlain recalled her mother's involvement in the community, particularly in assisting those with cerebral palsy. This dedication to helping others led the Culbreth family to organize an annual golf tournament to support a cerebral palsy nonprofit.

The discovery of the wallet brought back a flood of memories for Chamberlain, serving as a poignant reminder of her mother's life. The emotional impact was heightened when Chamberlain's own children and grandchildren accompanied her to the theater to retrieve the wallet. Witnessing the younger generations marvel at the items found within their great-grandmother's wallet provided a special moment for Chamberlain, reinforcing the sentiment that these artifacts were to be cherished.

Escobar, deeply moved by the experience, reflected on the privilege of operating the historic Plaza Theatre and returning a piece of family history to its rightful place. The Culbreth family, gathered together in November, expressed their gratitude for the recovery of the wallet and the opportunity to commemorate their family's legacy. Across multiple generations, they reveled in the shared connection to their ancestors and the stories enclosed within the wallet's worn folds.
