16-year-old flying solo on Frontier Airlines ends up in Puerto Rico instead of Ohio

In a series of unfortunate incidents involving unaccompanied minors, a 16-year-old boy found himself on the wrong flight, mistakenly boarding a Frontier Airlines flight from Tampa to San Juan, Puerto Rico instead of his intended destination of Cleveland, Ohio. The mix-up occurred on December 22, when both flights were boarding at the same gate, with the San Juan flight departing first. The boy, identified as Logan Lose, had been nervous about flying alone for the first time and had checked with the gate agent before boarding. However, the agent only checked his baggage and glanced at his boarding pass without scanning it.

Upon realizing his mistake, Logan frantically texted his family, expressing his fear and confusion. His father, Ryan Lose, described feeling his heart sink upon receiving the messages, knowing there was nothing he could do to help his son. Logan eventually arrived in Cleveland on December 23, a day later than planned, where he was visiting his mother for Christmas.

Frontier Airlines, in a statement, expressed their sincere apologies to the family for the error. They explained that while they allow children aged 15 and older to fly alone, they do not have a formal unaccompanied minor program that provides escorts for minors. This incident comes in the wake of another similar incident involving a 6-year-old child who was mistakenly put on a Spirit Airlines flight to Orlando instead of Fort Myers, Florida.

Logan's father, Ryan, criticized the gate agent for not scanning his son's boarding pass, which would have alerted them to the mistake. He emphasized that if the pass had been scanned, it would have been clear that Logan was on the wrong plane. Although the family reached out to Frontier Airlines to inform them of the situation, it was not until later that evening that they received confirmation that Logan was indeed on the flight to Puerto Rico.

The ordeal was incredibly stressful for the family, highlighting the need for better procedures to protect unaccompanied minors during air travel. While there are currently no Department of Transportation regulations specifically for unaccompanied minors, airlines typically have their own procedures in place. The US Department of Transportation states that most airlines allow children aged 15 and older to fly alone on domestic flights without any unaccompanied minor procedures.

Frontier Airlines has not yet responded to the father's assertion that scanning the boarding pass would have prevented the mix-up. However, it is clear that this incident has caused significant distress for the Lose family and raises concerns about the safety and care of unaccompanied minors during air travel.
