Countdown Begins for New Year's Eve Ball Drop in Times Square

NEW YORK - As the year comes to a close, anticipation is building for New York City's iconic ball drop on New Year's Eve in Times Square. With one million people expected to gather in person and another billion watching from around the world, this year's celebration is set to be the largest since before the COVID pandemic in 2019.

Earlier this week, the giant 2024 numerals were hoisted into place atop One Times Square, signaling the start of the countdown. The nearly 12,000 pound ball, a symbol of hope and renewal, received a stylish makeover with a bow tie. New Yorkers and tourists alike have been eagerly writing their wishes for the new year on pieces of confetti that will rain down as the clock strikes midnight.

For those unable to attend the festivities in person, there are several options to join the celebration. CBS News New York will be streaming live coverage of the countdown, allowing viewers to experience the excitement from the comfort of their homes. Additionally, the Times Square Alliance will be hosting a live stream starting at 6 p.m., providing a front-row seat to the festivities.

If you prefer to witness the ball drop firsthand, the best viewing spots are along Broadway from 43rd to 50th Street or along Seventh Avenue up to 59th Street. Access points for the viewing areas can be found at 49th Street from 6th and 8th Avenues. However, it is important to note that traffic is expected to be heavy, and organizers encourage the use of mass transit to avoid congestion.

The entertainment lineup for this year's ball drop is star-studded, with performances by renowned artists such as Paul Anka, Flo Rida, Megan Thee Stallion, Jelly Roll, Sabrina Carpenter, and Tyla. Their electrifying performances promise to keep the crowd energized throughout the night.

For those seeking a more luxurious experience, nearby hotels and restaurants are offering exclusive parties with tickets ranging from $450 to $12,500. These packages typically include access to food, drinks, and live entertainment, with some even offering prime views of the iconic ball.

As the clock nears midnight, the excitement will reach its peak. At 6 p.m., the ball will be raised to the top of the flagpole atop One Times Square, marking the official start of the celebration. Then, precisely at 11:59 p.m., the ball will begin its 60-second descent, culminating in a dazzling display of lights and confetti to welcome the New Year.

To ensure a smooth experience for attendees, organizers have implemented road closures. Starting at 4 a.m. on New Year's Eve, Seventh Avenue will be closed between 42nd and 48th streets, with side streets also being shut down from Sixth to Eighth avenues. At 11 a.m., Seventh Avenue and Broadway will be closed between 38th and 59th streets, allowing pedestrians to safely navigate the area.

As the world eagerly awaits the arrival of 2025, the New Year's Eve ball drop in Times Square promises to be a night to remember. Whether watching from afar or joining the crowd in person, the celebration will serve as a beacon of hope and unity as we bid farewell to the challenges of the past year and welcome a new beginning.
