NJ Man's Mercedes Rampage on New Year's Day Leaves Chaos in NYC

08:59 03.01.2024

In a shocking incident that unfolded in Midtown on New Year's Day, a Mercedes car filled with drugs plowed through the streets, leaving a trail of injured bystanders in its wake. The terrifying scene was captured on video, showing dozens of New Year's revelers fleeing in panic as the car sped onto the sidewalk. The driver, identified as Mohamed Alaouie, 44, of Fort Lee, New Jersey, was arrested following the attack that left at least eight people injured, including two police officers and actress Carrie Bernans from the movie "Black Panther."

The hair-raising footage shows Alaouie quickly reversing the sedan as witnesses scream in terror after police officers on foot patrol attempted to approach the car. In a desperate attempt to escape, the car then shoots forward, crashing into a halal cart before careening down the sidewalk, narrowly missing several bystanders and police officers. However, not everyone was able to avoid the car's path of destruction. The video shows one woman pinned beneath the smashed food cart, seemingly unconscious, as others rush to rescue her.

The chaotic incident occurred approximately an hour after the New Year's Eve ball drop, several blocks away. Bystanders had noticed Alaouie physically assaulting his 34-year-old girlfriend inside the moving black Mercedes-Benz, prompting them to alert the police. However, instead of stopping, Alaouie fled the scene, hitting multiple cars and pedestrians in the process.

The mayhem continued as Alaouie recklessly drove the Mercedes up and down multiple city streets between Sixth and Ninth Avenues. He struck a 31-year-old bystander and Carrie Bernans, causing her to suffer several broken bones, fractures, and chipped teeth. Bernans had been walking near the Chirp restaurant around 1:30 a.m. when the Mercedes crashed through the outdoor seating area.

During his rampage, Alaouie also collided with a parked unoccupied pick-up truck and a Toyota Camry, which was pushed into a Ford van. Several marked police cars were also damaged in the chaos. The two police officers he hit were hospitalized with minor injuries but were in stable condition. Alaouie and his girlfriend were also taken to the hospital following the violent spree.

Upon Alaouie's arrest, investigators discovered a significant amount of crack cocaine inside the Mercedes. This finding led to additional charges, including drug possession, against the suspect. It was revealed that Alaouie had a criminal history, with ten prior arrests related to drugs and criminal possession of stolen property.

The aftermath of the incident left the community shaken and fearful. Witnesses described their terror, with one cab driver, Sheikh Milon, recounting how he narrowly escaped being hit by the rampaging car. He expressed his relief that no lives were lost but emphasized the potential danger posed by Alaouie's reckless actions.

Video footage obtained by The Post captured the intense standoff between police and Alaouie at West 34th Street and Seventh Avenue, where he was finally apprehended. Initially in critical condition, Alaouie's health stabilized by Monday afternoon. His girlfriend, who also sustained minor injuries, was treated at the hospital as well.

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to piece together the events that led to this terrifying incident. The community is left grappling with the shock and trauma caused by the reckless actions of one individual and the lasting impact it has had on the victims and their families.
