Proud Boys Fugitive Sentenced to 10 Years for Jan. 6 Riot

19:06 04.01.2024

In a significant development related to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, Christopher Worrell, a member of the far-right extremist group Proud Boys, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. Worrell, who was convicted of assaulting police officers with pepper spray during the attack, had gone on the run after being placed under house arrest in Naples, Florida. He was apprehended six weeks later when he attempted to secretly return to his home. However, his capture was not without controversy, as he allegedly faked a drug overdose to further delay his sentencing.

Prosecutors argued that Worrell's disappearance and subsequent fake overdose had cost thousands of dollars in overtime for sheriff's deputies assigned to watch him. They also discovered night-vision goggles, $4,000 in cash, and survivalist gear in his home. Worrell's defense attorney claimed that his client had brought the spray gel and tactical vest to Washington for defensive purposes due to previous violence between Proud Boys and counter-protesters. However, prosecutors maintained that Worrell had lied on the witness stand, asserting that he was spraying other rioters, which the judge found preposterous.

During the sentencing hearing, Worrell, who suffers from a rare form of lymphoma, expressed fear that the cancer treatment he would receive in prison could be inadequate and potentially fatal. He admitted to taking a number of pills just before his recapture, resulting in opioids being found in his system. He claimed that his actions were driven by severe mental anguish and a genuine fear for his life. Worrell apologized and asked for forgiveness.

The judge, District Judge Royce Lamberth, acknowledged the challenges of the case and recognized the need for adequate cancer treatment for Worrell. However, he emphasized that the severity of Worrell's crimes warranted a significant sentence. Lamberth recommended that Worrell serve his time in a prison medical facility.

The Proud Boys, described by its members as a politically incorrect men's club for "Western chauvinists," has been implicated in the Capitol attack, with over three dozen people associated with the group facing charges. Former Proud Boys national chairman Enrique Tarrio was previously sentenced to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy and other crimes related to the plot to stop the transfer of power from former President Donald Trump to President Joe Biden.

The Jan. 6 riot has resulted in more than 1,200 people being charged with federal crimes, with over 700 individuals receiving prison sentences. The sentencing of Christopher Worrell serves as a reminder of the ongoing legal repercussions for those involved in the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
