Naked man arrested for diving into Bass Pro Shop aquarium

In a bizarre incident that left shoppers in Leeds, Alabama in shock, a 42-year-old man crashed his car outside a Bass Pro Shop, stripped down to his birthday suit, and plunged into the giant aquarium inside the store. The incident occurred on Thursday night, just before the store closed, and resulted in the man facing multiple charges, including public lewdness, disorderly conduct, and criminal mischief.

According to Leeds Police Chief Paul Irwin, the man's erratic behavior began shortly before the incident. He intentionally drove his vehicle into a pole in the store's parking lot, causing a commotion. The man's family later informed the police that he suffers from mental illness, shedding some light on his actions.

Eyewitnesses were left stunned as the man emerged from his crashed car and swiftly removed his clothes before sprinting into the Bass Pro Shop. Once inside, he made a daring leap into the massive aquarium, performing a cannonball that caught the attention of everyone present. The man then positioned himself under a waterfall, seemingly unfazed by the onlookers or the chaos he had caused.

Leeds police were promptly dispatched to the scene to handle the situation. Two officers attempted to reason with the man, who was belligerent and refused to comply with their instructions to exit the water. A video recorded by a bystander and reported by AL.com captured the tense standoff between the officers and the man. As the officers approached the aquarium, the man momentarily left the water, yelled obscenities at the officers, and shockingly dived back in.

"He was very erratic and was saying a lot of nasty things to the officers," Chief Irwin revealed in an interview with Fox News Digital. The man's behavior continued to escalate as he continued to shout at the officers. Eventually, he climbed over the side of the aquarium and fell to the concrete floor below, apparently losing consciousness.

Officers wasted no time in apprehending the man, placing him in handcuffs. However, as he regained consciousness, he attempted to resist arrest and assaulted one of the officers with a kick. To ensure his safety and the safety of others, the man was covered with a blanket and escorted out of the store.

The suspect, identified as George Owens, was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment and a mental health evaluation before being booked into the St. Clair County Jail. Jail records show that Owens, a resident of Sterrett, Alabama, was booked on Thursday at 9:39 p.m. Chief Irwin confirmed that Owens will face an array of charges, including public lewdness, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, second-degree assault, two counts of criminal mischief for hitting the pole and damaging the patrol car, and two counts of reckless endangerment for his reckless driving.

Despite the severity of his actions, Owens is expected to be released on bond. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by individuals with mental illness and the importance of providing them with proper support and care.
