Over 580,000 beds are under recall because they can break or collapse during use

14:36 20.01.2024

According to a recall notice posted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Thursday, more than 580,000 beds sold at popular retailers such as Walmart, Wayfair, and Overstock.com have been recalled due to reports that they break during use. The beds in question are upholstered platform bed frames made by Home Design Inc. and are said to pose fall and injury hazards to consumers as they can sag or collapse during use.

Home Design Inc., a furniture wholesaler based in Silver Lake, Indiana, has received a total of 128 reports of the beds breaking, sagging, or collapsing, resulting in 36 unspecified injuries. The faulty beds were sold on Walmart, Wayfair, and Overstock's respective websites between July 2018 and November 2023. The prices ranged from $100 to $300.

The CPSC has provided specific details regarding the affected beds. The recall includes the following part numbers: 80032 Tufted Upholstered Low Profile Standard Beds, 80071 Tufted Upholstered Low Profile Platform Beds, and 80002, a gray, warm gray, or blue bed frame with standard supports requiring a box spring, available in twin, full, queen, and king sizes. Additionally, part number 80071 is a gray, beige, or black bed frame with platform supports that do not require a box spring, available in the same sizes. Part number 80053 does not have a center support leg halfway along the side rail. Consumers can find these part numbers in the installation manual, on the packaging, and the law label.

Home Design Inc. has urged customers to immediately stop using the recalled beds and contact the company for a free repair kit. To receive the repair kit, customers are required to send a photo of the bed or a copy of the proof of purchase, as well as a photo of the law label on the back of the headrest. Home Design Inc. has provided PDF- and video-style instructions on their website to assist customers with the repair kit.

Roughly 527,000 of the recalled beds were sold in the United States, while approximately 56,000 were sold in Canada. Both Home Design Inc. and the CPSC are strongly advising consumers to stop using the affected beds and to reach out to the company for the necessary repair kit. The CPSC has provided a list of affected models and corresponding part numbers on their recall notice, as well as on Home Design Inc.'s website.

Representatives for Home Design Inc. have not yet responded to requests for comment from The Post. The beds were manufactured in Malaysia and were sold online through Wayfair, Walmart.com, and Overstock.com.
