Joni Mitchell, 80, makes long-awaited Grammy Awards debut performance

13:11 29.01.2024

Joni Mitchell, the legendary singer-songwriter, will be making her highly anticipated debut performance at the Grammy Awards on February 4th. The Recording Academy and CBS made the announcement on Sunday, revealing that Mitchell will be taking the stage for the first time in her illustrious career. Mitchell, who has won nine Grammy Awards in the past and received a lifetime achievement award in 2002, is also nominated for her 10th Grammy this year in the Best Folk Album category for her 2023 release "Joni Mitchell at Newport [Live]," which was produced by Brandi Carlile.

Although no details about Mitchell's performance were immediately provided, this appearance comes after a gradual return to live performances in the last two years. Mitchell had previously been assumed to have retired from public performances after suffering a debilitating brain aneurysm in 2015. However, it was later revealed that she had been actively participating in informal musical gatherings at her home, which became known as "Joni jams." The concept of these gatherings went public when Mitchell surprised audiences with a Joni jam at the Newport Folk Festival in July 2022, which was captured on her currently Grammy-nominated live album.

Since then, Mitchell has made two more public concert appearances, including an advertised Joni Jam at the Gorge in Washington state and a Brandi Carlile & Friends show at the Hollywood Bowl. These performances showcased Mitchell's ability to overcome the challenges posed by her aneurysm and reaffirmed her status as a musical icon.

The Recording Academy further celebrated Mitchell as its Person of the Year at an all-star concert and dinner in Las Vegas in early 2022. Although she only sang a few lines during the untelevised tribute, this event marked another significant moment in Mitchell's journey back to the stage.

Mitchell's Grammy wins span an impressive period from 1969 to 2022, with her most recent win being for Best Historical Album for "Joni Mitchell Archives - Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963-1967)." Her only win in one of the top four general categories came at the 50th annual Grammys, where she was one of the multiple winners of Album of the Year for "River: The Joni Letters" as a guest singer on Herbie Hancock's tribute album.

The Grammy Awards, which will be broadcast live on CBS from Los Angeles' Crypto.com Arena, will also feature performances from U2, Billy Joel, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, Luke Combs, Travis Scott, and Burna Boy. This year's ceremony is expected to showcase the achievements of female artists, who dominate the top three categories. SZA leads the nominations with nine, while Victoria Monet has seven and Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and Taylor Swift are each up for six awards. Swift has also broken a Grammy record with her nomination for Song of the Year, becoming the first artist to have seven tracks nominated in this category.
