Goose is at center of deadly medical helicopter crash

23:23 03.02.2024

In a tragic incident that occurred on January 20th, a medical helicopter crashed in western Oklahoma, resulting in the loss of all three individuals on board. According to a preliminary report released by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), a dead goose was discovered in the flight control system of the helicopter. The report, however, does not specify a suspected cause of the crash, but it does mention that multiple geese were found in the debris field.

The helicopter, operated by Air Evac Lifeteam, was en route back to Weatherford after transporting a patient to an Oklahoma City hospital when the accident took place. The victims of the crash included the pilot, as well as a flight nurse and a paramedic who were part of the Air Evac Lifeteam crew. The NTSB report states that the aircraft was located in a pasture near Hydro, approximately 60 miles west of Oklahoma City.

The investigation into the probable cause of the crash is expected to take up to two years, according to the NTSB. As part of the investigation, samples of the goose feathers found in the debris field will be analyzed for identification. However, the report mentions that a review of the US Air Force's Avian Hazard Advisory System revealed a low probability of bird activity in the vicinity of the accident.

The search for the helicopter began at around 11:30 p.m. on the night of the crash after the GPS system on board ceased functioning. The wreckage was eventually located in an open pasture in Hydro. The report confirms that all major components of the helicopter were found at the accident site, with the fuselage, engine, and tail rotor forming the main part of the wreckage. The transmission, however, had separated from the rest of the wreck. Additionally, a motor blade was discovered in an adjacent field, while the mast nut was found within the debris field.

This devastating incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks involved in medical helicopter operations. The loss of three dedicated individuals who were committed to saving lives is a profound tragedy. As the investigation continues, the NTSB will work diligently to determine the probable cause of the crash, providing answers to the grieving families and the aviation community.
