Former Trump administration official, Mike Gill, has tragically died after being shot during a carjacking spree in Washington, D.C. His wife, Kristina Gill, released a statement expressing the devastating loss felt by their family. She described Mike Gill as not only a devoted husband and father but also a cherished son, brother, and friend. Gill was known for his dedication to improving the lives of others. He was an active member of his church, mentored coworkers, served on the District of Columbia Board of Elections, and coached his daughter's soccer team.

Gill worked as the senior vice president of capital markets with the Housing Policy Council. The council released a statement expressing their grief over Gill's death, calling it a "huge loss." Erica Richardson, a spokesperson for the Gill family, initially shared the news of the shooting. The Metropolitan Police Department of Washington stated that the violence began when an unidentified person shot a male driver during a carjacking. Gill's family confirmed that he was the man who was shot.

The carjacking spree involved a Jeep Grand Cherokee and lasted approximately three minutes. The attacker then attempted to steal a Mercedes-Benz but failed. In his final act, the attacker demanded car keys from a man and a woman, fatally shooting Alberto Vasquez Jr. before fleeing in a stolen Chrysler 200. The following morning, the attacker fired at a police cruiser on Interstate 295, causing damage to the vehicle. The attacker, identified as 28-year-old Artell Cunningham, was later shot and killed by police in New Carrollton, Maryland.

Mike Gill, a father of three, was taken to the hospital with critical head injuries after being shot outside his wife's office. Gill, a former official in Donald Trump's administration, served as the chief operating officer of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. He also had a three-term tenure on the DC Board of Elections. Eyewitness Yolanda Douglas described the scene, stating that Gill was lying in the road, bleeding from the head, before his wife discovered him. The attacker later killed Alberto Vasquez Jr. and stole his car before being shot and killed by police.

Gill's family described him as an amazing husband, father, friend, and colleague, emphasizing his sense of humor and his ability to bring people together. The shooting occurred amidst a crime wave in Washington, D.C., with increasing motor vehicle thefts and a rise in total crime. Gill's shooting highlights the staffing crisis in the Washington DC Metropolitan Police.

Gill's critical condition was reported by Erica Richardson, a spokesperson for his family. The D.C. police described his injuries as life-threatening. Gill, a married father of three, had served in the Trump administration and had ties to the political world. He was targeted in his vehicle while waiting outside his wife's workplace. Witnesses described the horrifying scene, with Gill lying on the pavement in a pool of blood. His wife rushed to his side, distraught over the incident.

The suspect in Gill's shooting fled the scene on foot and went on to commit several successful carjackings. He also opened fire on occupied police vehicles before being fatally shot by police in Prince George's County, Maryland. The suspect's identity has not been released. The motorist killed in one of the later carjackings was identified as Alberto Vasquez Jr., leaving behind his girlfriend and two young daughters.

The tragic death of Mike Gill and the violent carjacking spree have left the community in shock. The loss of such a dedicated and beloved individual has created a void that can never be filled.
