Texas Port Rescues Dog Trapped in Shipping Container for Over a Week

19:20 04.02.2024

One lucky pup named Connie the Container Dog was rescued by a group of marine inspectors at the Port of Houston last week. The inspectors, MST3 Bryan Wainscott, MST1 Lucas Loe, MST2 Ryan McMahon, and MST3 Jose Reyes, were randomly selecting containers for inspection when they heard barking and scratching coming from one of the containers in a stack. The container was stacked about 25 feet in the air and had to be lowered by crane in order to rescue the trapped dog.

According to USCG Heartland, when the inspectors opened the container, a tired and hungry dog popped out. Connie, described as a "sweet girl," was very happy to see her rescuers. Video footage posted on Facebook by USCG Heartland showed Connie wagging her tail, sniffing around, and drinking water given to her by the guardsmen. Coast Guard officials later determined that Connie had been trapped in the container for at least eight days without food or water. She was dirty and skinny when she was finally freed.

Although it is unclear where the container came from, it was filled with junked vehicles that were likely being shipped overseas for parts. Based on this information, Chief Petty Officer Corinne Zilnicki speculated that Connie had been accidentally trapped in the container while inside a car at a junkyard. If this was the case, Connie would have likely been without food for two weeks by the time she reached her destination via cargo ship.

The marine inspectors took Connie to the Pasadena Animal Shelter for care. She was then transferred to Forever Changed Animal Rescue (FCAR) on Friday after FCAR's founder and veterinarian, Dr. Andrea Deoudes, saw Connie's story on Facebook. FCAR's Texas coordinator was confident that they would be able to find Connie a deserving forever home.

Connie, who weighs 30 pounds and is slightly underweight, tested positive for heartworm. FCAR has committed to starting her treatment as soon as possible. They will also conduct a full examination to ensure she receives the necessary care. Although Connie is incredibly sweet, she is currently shy and scared in her new surroundings, which is to be expected.

The rescue's Facebook post about Connie's story received numerous comments from users expressing interest in adopting or fostering her. However, it is not clear if she has found her forever home yet. FCAR expressed their gratitude to all the people involved in Connie's rescue and saving her life.

Ryan McMahon, one of the Coast Guard officers who discovered Connie, recounted the experience. He and his team were inspecting shipping containers at the Port of Houston when they thought they heard barking coming from one of the containers. They recorded a video of the moment and used a crane to bring the container down. To their surprise, a sweet and friendly dog emerged from the container. McMahon described how Connie seemed happy to be out of the dark space and in the arms of people who would take care of her.

Coast Guard officials later determined that Connie had been trapped inside the container for at least eight days without food or water. McMahon and his team drove her to an animal shelter in Pasadena, where she was checked out. Forever Changed Animal Rescue took her in and is working to get her healthy and ready for adoption.

The Coast Guard officials are unsure of the container's origin, but they suspect that Connie was accidentally trapped inside while she was in a car at a junkyard. McMahon expressed his gratitude for being in the right place at the right time to hear Connie's barking and prevent her from being shipped on a cargo ship. He believes that she would not have survived the journey without food or water for another two weeks.

Although McMahon and his team had considered adopting Connie, they realized it wasn't the right time for any of them. However, they are confident that Connie will find a loving home where she will be taken care of.
