Meta commits to labeling AI-generated images on Facebook and Instagram

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, announced on Tuesday that it will be implementing labels on AI-generated images that appear on its social media platforms. This move is part of a larger effort within the tech industry to distinguish between real and synthetic content. Meta is collaborating with industry partners to establish technical standards that will facilitate the identification of AI-generated images, as well as video and audio created by AI tools.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan reiterated this commitment in a recent blog post, stating that labels will be introduced in the coming months to inform viewers when they are viewing synthetic content.

Tom Clarke, a science and technology editor, believes that Meta's move will likely prompt other companies to follow suit and provide clarity regarding the authenticity of images. However, he also highlights that digital watermarking can be easily removed, even if buried in image metadata. The true test of the effectiveness of these labels will be whether there is a decrease in harmful fake images circulating online in the coming months.
