Trump hints RNC boss Ronna McDaniel should step down as org runs low on cash

18:38 07.02.2024

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has informed former President Donald Trump that she will be stepping down from her position later this month, following the South Carolina primary. Sources have revealed that Trump is expected to endorse North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley as McDaniel's replacement. This announcement comes after the RNC reported its lowest fundraising numbers in a decade, leading to increased calls for McDaniel to resign within the Republican party.

During an interview with Newsmax, Trump hinted at McDaniel's potential departure, stating, "I think she knows that, I think she understands that." He also took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to announce that he would be making a decision on his recommendations for RNC growth the day after the South Carolina Primary. Trump praised McDaniel's work in Michigan during his 2016 election victory and referred to her as a "friend."

The preference for Whatley as McDaniel's successor stems from his belief in widespread voting fraud during the 2020 election, a view shared by Trump. Whatley is also credited with delivering North Carolina for Trump in the same election. As general counsel at the RNC, he has been supportive of efforts to implement new voting laws to address concerns about fraud.

The RNC's financial situation has also been a cause for concern. According to Federal Election Commission filings, the organization had only $8 million in cash on hand as of December 31, the lowest amount since 2014. In contrast, the Trump campaign finished 2023 with $42 million in cash on hand. This financial disparity has led to criticism of McDaniel's leadership and calls for change within the party.

While McDaniel had previously received Trump's endorsement for a fourth two-year term as RNC chair, his recent comments have cast doubt on her future in the position. Trump stated in an interview with Fox News that there would likely be changes made at the RNC, and he distanced himself from the organization, emphasizing that he had nothing to do with it.

In response to Trump's comments, biotech entrepreneur and former 2024 GOP candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called for McDaniel's resignation. Trump's supporters have also been vocal in their criticism of McDaniel's leadership following the party's underperformance in recent elections.

As the RNC prepares for a potential change in leadership, Chief of Staff Mike Reed has announced his departure from the organization. Reed, who has held the position since February 2022, cited a need to focus on his growing family. He assured colleagues that the RNC is in a strong position and will be able to seamlessly merge with the presumptive nominee.

Chairman McDaniel expressed her appreciation for Reed's guidance and wished him well in his future endeavors. She emphasized her commitment to leading the organization and her ongoing discussions with President Trump. The RNC remains prepared for any changes that may arise as the party moves forward with the presidential nomination process.
