Henry Fambrough, Last Original Spinner, Passes Away at 85

06:02 08.02.2024

Last surviving original member of The Spinners, Henry Fambrough, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 85, according to a spokesperson for the group. Fambrough died peacefully in his northern Virginia home due to natural causes, as confirmed by spokesperson Tanisha Jackson. The iconic R&B group, known for their hits such as "It's a Shame," "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love," and "The Rubberband Man," was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in November.

Henry Fambrough, along with Billy Henderson, Pervis Jackson, Bobby Smith, Philippe Wynne, and John Edwards, was listed as an inductee. Last May, Fambrough had the opportunity to visit Motown's Studio A in Detroit during a special ceremony. As part of the event, the group donated 375 outfits worn during their performances to the Motown Museum. Fambrough reminisced about the 1960s, sharing that he used to dream about the studio when he first walked into it. He revealed that he had to convince his wife that the studio was where he went for 3 a.m. rehearsals and recording sessions with his fellow group members.

The Spinners' first major hit for Motown was "It's A Shame," which reached No. 14 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1970. Later on, the group signed with Atlantic Records and achieved a string of successes, including the chart-topping "Then Came You" in 1974, featuring singer Dionne Warwick. Their songs received six Grammy Award nominations and earned them 18 platinum and gold albums.

Originally known as The Domingoes, The Spinners formed in 1954 just north of Detroit in Ferndale. Ten years later, they joined Motown Records and began their journey to becoming one of the most iconic R&B groups of all time.

Henry Fambrough is survived by his wife of 52 years, Norma, and his daughter Heather Williams. His passing marks the end of an era for The Spinners, but their music and legacy will continue to resonate with fans for generations to come.
