One person was killed and multiple others were injured in a shooting that took place near Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, following the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory parade on Wednesday. According to fire officials, at least four gunshot victims were being treated at University Health hospital, while eight others who were not shot were also receiving medical attention. The Kansas City Police Department stated on social media that "multiple people were struck" when shots were fired near the parking garage west of Union Station. Two individuals who were armed were subsequently taken into custody for further investigation.

Images and videos shared on social media depicted chaotic scenes as people wearing Chiefs jerseys and hats fled from Union Station, while police officers and first responders rushed to the scene. Some footage showed individuals receiving medical aid and being carried away on stretchers. Police urged witnesses to the shooting to meet with officers at a nearby intersection, and they also established a child reunification location near Union Station for children who had been separated from their parents or chaperones.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson and his wife were present at the parade when the shots were fired, but they were confirmed to be safe and secure. The governor's office expressed gratitude to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kansas City Police Department, and other first responders for their swift and professional actions. Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, who was also in attendance, stated on social media that she had been safely evacuated and encouraged everyone to follow instructions and updates from the police.

Authorities reported that one person was killed in the shooting, while nine others sustained injuries. Of the injured, three were in critical condition, five were in serious condition, and one had non-life-threatening injuries. Two individuals were detained in connection with the incident. Law enforcement officials familiar with the preliminary investigation stated that the shooting appeared to be criminal in nature rather than an act of terrorism.

The shooting occurred as the Chiefs' victory parade was coming to a close, with hundreds of thousands of fans in attendance. The Kansas City Fire Department confirmed that there were a total of 12 potential victims, with additional walk-ins to the hospital being reported. Police urged the public to remain calm and avoid the Union Station parking garage area to allow for the treatment of the shooting victims.

Social media posts from Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and linebacker Drue Tranquill expressed prayers and support for Kansas City. The White House stated that the Biden administration was closely monitoring the situation, with federal law enforcement providing assistance to local authorities. The incident has cast a shadow over the celebratory atmosphere of the parade, as fans and the community come to terms with the tragic events that unfolded.
