Nonbinary Oklahoma Teen Nex Benedict Dies by Suicide, Autopsy Reveals

17:42 13.03.2024

A 16-year-old nonbinary student in Oklahoma, Nex Benedict, tragically died by suicide a day after a physical altercation in a high school girls' bathroom, according to an autopsy report released on Wednesday. The report revealed that Nex had a "combined toxicity" of diphenhydramine and fluoxetine, commonly known as Benadryl and Prozac, in their system at the time of death. The incident at Owasso High School on February 7, where Nex was found beaten on the bathroom floor, had sparked outrage from gay and transgender rights groups who claimed Nex had been bullied at school. Despite initial confusion surrounding the cause of death, the Owasso Police Department suspected from the beginning that Nex's death was a result of suicide. The investigation revealed that Nex had been involved in a fight in the girls' bathroom the day before their death, prompting a school nurse to send them to the hospital. Nex's mother later called emergency responders to their home the following day, where Nex was pronounced dead. The tragic loss of Nex Benedict has led to rallies and vigils across the country, shedding light on the ongoing dangers and persecution faced by the LGBTQ+ community.
