Escaped Idaho inmate and accomplice captured after manhunt, linked to 2 homicides

Authorities are investigating the deaths of an 83-year-old man who was walking his dogs and a 72-year-old man who lived in a remote cabin to see if they are connected to the escape of an Idaho white supremacist prison gang member and an accomplice. Skylar Meade and Nicholas Umphenour, members of the Aryan Knights gang, were arrested in Twin Falls, Idaho, after a 36-hour manhunt. The two were involved in an ambush at a Boise hospital where they shot and wounded two Idaho corrections officers. During their time on the run, Meade and Umphenour are suspected of being responsible for the deaths of two men in northern Idaho. The victims were identified as James L. Mauney, 83, and Gerald Don Henderson, 72. Henderson's partner, Ron Thompson, described the senseless murder of his partner as heartbreaking. Thompson had known Umphenour for about a decade, and the couple had allowed him to stay at their cabin before kicking him out due to his violent tendencies. Thompson grew worried when he learned of Umphenour's involvement in Meade's escape and requested a welfare check on Henderson, leading to the discovery of his body outside their remote cabin. Meade and Umphenour were apprehended in Twin Falls, where they made initial court appearances facing charges related to their escape and the shootings of the corrections officers. A third person, Tonia Huber, was also arrested for harboring a fugitive and other charges. The incident has sparked a review of policies and practices within the Idaho Department of Correction. Meade, who had a history of violent crimes, was serving a 20-year sentence for shooting at a sheriff's sergeant during a high-speed chase. Umphenour, who had previously stayed at Henderson's cabin, was released from prison in January. The Aryan Knights gang, to which both men belonged, has been described as a scourge within the Idaho prison system. The attack on the corrections officers at the hospital has raised concerns about security at medical facilities amid a rise in threats and violence. The Idaho Department of Correction is working to understand how the escape was planned and executed, with Meade having been held in administrative segregation due to being deemed a severe security risk. The case has shed light on the criminal histories of the suspects, including Huber, who has a record of drug-related charges and previous prison sentences. The community is reeling from the violence and loss of life associated with the escape and subsequent manhunt.
