Maryland secures $60m emergency aid for Key Bridge collapse cleanup

20:27 28.03.2024

The federal government has approved an emergency relief fund to cover the majority of costs for rebuilding the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore, following its collapse earlier in the week. The initial $60 million released to state authorities will assist in current recovery efforts, though Governor Wes Moore cautioned that there is a long road ahead. Two bodies have been recovered from the Patapsco River, with four others still missing and presumed dead. The salvage mission has been suspended due to safety concerns for divers and difficulty reaching trapped vehicles. The funds will serve as a down payment for initial costs, with additional funding to be provided as work progresses. President Joe Biden has pledged full federal support for rebuilding the bridge, and the state of Maryland is requesting $60 million in initial funding from the federal government. The insurance issues surrounding the bridge collapse are expected to be complex and time-consuming to resolve. The community is coming together to support the families affected by this tragedy, with Governor Moore promising that the best minds are working on plans to clear debris and recover the remaining bodies. The investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing, with the National Transportation Safety Board leading the inquiry. President Biden has expressed his commitment to rebuilding the bridge and supporting the community through this difficult time.
