New York City rattled by earthquake in Northeast

12:20 05.04.2024

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake shook the densely populated New York City metropolitan area and much of the surrounding region on Friday morning, with the U.S. Geological Survey reporting the quake centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey. Residents across the Northeast reported feeling the tremors, with reports of buildings shaking and rattling coming in from New Jersey to Long Island. New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Adams have both been briefed on the quake, with Hochul stating that her team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred. The impact was felt by over 42 million people, with tremors lasting for several seconds and reports of shaking coming in from as far away as the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border. The earthquake stirred memories of the 2011 quake that rattled the East Coast, leaving cracks in the Washington Monument and spurring the evacuation of the White House and Capitol. The Ramapo Fault in New Jersey, stemming from the Appalachian mountains, is a major fault line in the area, and the USGS had previously warned of the potential for damaging quakes in the region. Residents were startled by the rumbling of the quake, with one New York City resident describing how their whole apartment building started shaking. The Fire Department of New York reported no initial reports of damage, but officials are still assessing the impact of the earthquake.
