Maryland officials to discuss rebuilding collapsed bridge with Congress

14:54 09.04.2024

Maryland Governor Wes Moore is taking action to address the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which has blocked the main shipping channel at Baltimore's port for nearly two weeks. Governor Moore plans to meet with members of Congress to discuss support for rebuilding the bridge, emphasizing that this issue is not partisan but a patriotic responsibility to support the country's economic engine.

As the Maryland legislative session came to a close, emergency legislation authorizing the use of the state's rainy-day fund to help port employees was approved and sent to Governor Moore's desk, who planned to sign it immediately. The bridge collapsed on March 26 after being struck by the cargo ship Dali, resulting in the tragic deaths of six workers from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

Search and recovery efforts are ongoing for the remaining victims, with temporary alternate channels cleared to allow limited access for certain vessels. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers aims to restore normal capacity to Baltimore's port by the end of May. Governor Moore expressed optimism about progress in reopening channels, highlighting the removal of debris and steel from the Patapsco River.

The governor emphasized the state's commitment to supporting the families of the workers and ensuring closure for them. He praised the efforts of salvage divers and cranes on site to clear the waterway and remove sections of the bridge obstructing the ship's movement. Despite the challenges, Governor Moore remains hopeful about the restoration of the port's operations and the eventual reopening of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
