Massive Landslide Forces Evacuation of Homes in Rolling Hills Estates Area LOS ANGELES COUNTY - A devastating landslide in the Rolling Hills Estates area of Los Angeles County has forced the evacuation of more homes in the Palos Verdes Peninsula. According to Mayor Britt Huff, officials have issued a mandatory evacuation order for five additional houses, bringing the total number of evacuated homes to 17. The incident, which started over the weekend, has resulted in the near-complete destruction of 12 homes along Peartree Lane. The land movement has caused homes to crumble, leaving them uninhabitable. The situation worsened on Tuesday when a break in a sewer main, caused by the land movement, prompted the evacuation of five more homes. Authorities have stated that the newly evacuated residents are being provided with assistance to find shelter. City leaders have declared a local emergency, giving them access to additional resources and funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the California Governor"s Office of Emergency Services. The estimated costs of responding to the Peartree Lane Land Movement Incident are still unknown. Geologists and specialists have been called to the scene to survey the land movement, but the cause of the major landslide remains unknown. Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Anthony Marrone stated that crews are closely monitoring 16 other homes in the area as the situation continues to develop. Residents affected by the disaster have met with officials at City Hall. Los Angeles County Assessor Jeff Prang has assured property owners that they will not be forced to pay property tax bills for their destroyed homes or properties. Rolling Hills Estates, a gated community located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, is about 25 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The population of Rolling Hills Estates is approximately 8,000, with a median household income of about $160,000.
