Cocaine Found in White House Prompts Security Assessment Washington - The Republican-led House Oversight and Accountability Committee has launched an investigation into security practices at the White House following the discovery of a small bag of cocaine near a lobby in the West Wing over the weekend. Committee chairman Rep. James Comer of Kentucky has sent a letter to U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, requesting more information about the incident and a staff-level briefing by July 14. In his letter, Comer expressed his concern over the presence of illegal drugs in the White House, calling it an unacceptable and shameful moment in its history. He emphasized the need to determine whose failures led to the evacuation of the building and the discovery of the illegal substance. The cocaine was found on Sunday, prompting a temporary shutdown of the White House. President Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden were not present at the time, as they were spending the weekend with their family at Camp David. An initial test conducted by the District of Columbia Fire Department confirmed that the substance was cocaine. It was discovered in a small Ziploc bag in a cubby used by visitors to store personal items near the West Executive entryway on the ground floor of the West Wing. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the area where the cocaine was found is heavily traveled by staff and visitors, including those taking tours. Tours took place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. President Biden has been briefed on the incident. The Secret Service is leading a comprehensive review to determine how the substance entered the White House. They will be examining surveillance footage and entrance logs to identify who had access to the area. The discovery of the cocaine prompted a precautionary closure of the White House on Sunday evening. Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed that the D.C. Fire Department was called to evaluate the substance and determined it was non-hazardous. However, further testing is being conducted to confirm that it is indeed cocaine. The substance was found in a common area of the West Wing used by White House staff and guests to store cellphones. The investigation into how it entered the White House is ongoing. President Biden returned to the White House on Tuesday morning along with several members of his family. The incident has raised concerns about the security measures in place at the White House and the need for a thorough assessment to prevent similar incidents in the future.
