Deadly Monsoon Rains Devastate South Korea

13:46 16.07.2023

Days of heavy monsoon rains have caused widespread devastation in South Korea, leading to multiple casualties and displacing thousands of residents. According to officials, the powerful rains have resulted in flooding, landslides, and other incidents, leaving at least 26 people dead and 10 others missing. The rainfall is expected to intensify in the coming days, further exacerbating the situation.

While heavy monsoon rains are common in South Korea during the summer, the number of casualties reported this time is unusually high. Experts attribute this to several factors. In recent years, rainfall has been concentrated in urban areas near large cities like Busan and Seoul. However, this time, the rains fell predominantly in rural parts of Chungcheong and Jeolla Provinces, which are more vulnerable due to limited monitoring and accessibility. Moreover, climate change has resulted in more intense bursts of rain, making it harder to prepare for floods.

The casualties include individuals who were killed inside collapsed homes and buildings, as well as those buried in landslides. One person also died when a road collapsed underneath them. To mitigate the impact, several dams in the central region began the controlled release of water, while one dam overflowed, necessitating the evacuation of downstream residents. A passenger train derailed when soil entered a railroad track, but fortunately, there were no casualties reported.

The South Korean government has been on high alert during the monsoon season, with top officials emphasizing the importance of safety. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has called for an "all-out response" by the government, mobilizing the military to assist in rescue efforts. The Korea Meteorological Administration has warned that the rain will continue to intensify in the central and southwestern parts of the country over the next two days.

As a result of the heavy rains, thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes, and numerous flights, trains, and roads have been canceled or suspended. The rainfall has also caused widespread power outages, leaving thousands of households without electricity. The government has urged emergency workers to help with evacuations and rescue operations.

South Korea's monsoon season typically lasts from June to early August, with heavy rains leading to occasional flooding and landslides. While the country has experienced devastating floods in the past, including in 1984 and 2020, recent years have seen a decrease in flood-related deaths. However, the current situation highlights the need for improved preparedness and response measures, particularly as climate change continues to impact weather patterns.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities working tirelessly to locate missing individuals and provide assistance to affected communities. The government remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens during this challenging time.
