Police fatally shoot suspect in Georgia killing spree

21:47 17.07.2023

In a shocking and tragic turn of events, the motives behind the killings of four residents in a suburban neighborhood of Hampton, Georgia, remain under investigation. The suspect, Andre Longmore, was shot and killed by officers on Sunday during an intense exchange of gunfire. The shootout left a sheriff's deputy and two police officers wounded as they attempted to apprehend Longmore.

The violent spree began on Saturday morning, sending shockwaves through the bucolic subdivision in Hampton. Authorities launched a manhunt for Longmore, who was considered armed and dangerous. The four victims, three men, and a woman, were gunned down in separate locations near one another in the Atlanta suburb.

During a press conference, Hampton Police Chief James Turner labeled Longmore as armed and dangerous, urging residents to remain vigilant. The shootings took place late Saturday morning, leaving the tight-knit community of approximately 8,500 people in a state of shock.

On Sunday, Henry County Sheriff Reginald B. Scandrett announced that the suspect had been located and killed, providing some relief to the state of Georgia. Law enforcement had tracked Longmore to an area near the border between Henry County and Clayton County, about 20 miles south of Atlanta. Sworn officers engaged in two separate gun battles with the suspect before he was ultimately neutralized and declared dead.

Authorities had been actively searching for Longmore and a stolen GMC Acadia SUV, which they believed he was driving. The arrest warrant against Longmore was based on four allegations of murder. The victims were identified as Scott Levitt, 67; Shirley Levitt, 66; Steve Blizzard, 65; and Ronald Jeffers, 66. Longmore was a resident of the Dogwood Lakes Drive community where the killings took place, and the stolen Acadia belonged to Blizzard.

The community of Hampton is left grieving in the aftermath of this senseless violence. Hampton City Manager Alex Cohilas expressed gratitude that no more lives were lost during the resolution of the situation. Chief Turner emphasized that Hampton is typically a safe community, with the last reported homicide occurring in 2018. The violence witnessed on Saturday was far from normal for the town.

Sheriff Scandrett revealed that a few law enforcement officers were injured during Saturday's events. The most severe injury was sustained by an officer who was struck in the back by gunfire. However, the officer was conscious, breathing, and expected to survive. At least one other officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has launched an inquiry into the killing spree and the response by law enforcement. As the investigation continues, the community of Hampton and the state of Georgia are left grappling with the tragedy and searching for answers.
