Historic Appointment: New York City's First Latino Police Commissioner

22:08 17.07.2023

In a historic moment for the New York City Police Department (NYPD), Mayor Eric Adams has appointed Edward Caban as the city's first Hispanic police commissioner. Caban, who joined the NYPD as a young patrol officer in 1991, has risen through the ranks and will now oversee the largest police force in the United States.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday at the Bronx stationhouse where Caban began his career. Mayor Adams administered the oath of office and praised Caban as a representative of the blue-collar city. Caban, the son of a transit police officer who served with Adams when he was on the transit force, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity.

Caban's father, retired Detective Juan Caban, and other family members were present to witness and celebrate his appointment as the city's top police official. At 55 years old, Caban will be responsible for supervising approximately 36,000 officers and 19,000 civilian employees.

Caban's appointment comes after his central role in driving down crime over the past 18 months. With his 30 years of experience, both Mayor Adams and Caban believe he is the right choice for the position. Mayor Adams referred to Caban as a Bronx native and the city's first Latino commissioner, stating that he serves as an inspiration to the entire city.

Former Commissioner Keechant Sewell, the first woman to lead the NYPD, resigned last month after 18 months in the role. While Sewell did not provide a reason for her resignation, there had been speculation of underlying issues and power struggles within the department. Both Adams and Caban commended Sewell for her accomplishments and praised her for breaking barriers.

Under Sewell's leadership, crime rates in New York City have decreased significantly. Department data shows a 17 percent reduction in shootings and a 3 percent drop in homicides in June compared to the same month in 2022. Caban, who served as first deputy commissioner under Sewell, was instrumental in achieving these results.

Caban's journey within the NYPD has been one of perseverance and dedication. Starting as a patrol officer in the Bronx, he steadily climbed the ranks, holding positions such as sergeant, lieutenant, captain, executive officer, commanding officer, deputy inspector, inspector, and now commissioner.

Mayor Adams, himself a former NYPD captain, expressed his confidence in Caban's abilities to lead the department. Caban's appointment as the first Hispanic police commissioner in the city's 178-year history is a significant milestone for diversity and inclusivity within the NYPD.

As Caban steps into his new role, he recognizes the honor and responsibility that comes with being the first Hispanic police commissioner. With his experience and dedication, Caban is poised to continue driving down crime rates and ensuring the safety and well-being of the people of New York City.
