Tornado Hits Pfizer Plant in North Carolina, Threatening Medicine Shortages

18:31 20.07.2023

An important Pfizer pharmaceutical plant in North Carolina was severely damaged on Wednesday after a powerful tornado ripped through the area, threatening production lines that normally provide huge amounts of medicine to U.S. hospitals. The plant, located in Rocky Mount, suffered extensive damage as the twister touched down shortly after midday. Despite the destruction, Pfizer confirmed that there were no reports of serious injuries among its employees.

The Pfizer plant in Rocky Mount is a large manufacturing complex composed of several massive buildings. Parts of roofs were torn off, causing large quantities of medicine to be tossed about, according to Nash County Sheriff Keith Stone. Stone reported that approximately 50,000 pallets of medicine were strewn across the facility and damaged by the rain and wind. The plant is responsible for producing anesthesia, other drugs, and nearly 25% of all sterile injectable medications used in U.S. hospitals, as stated on Pfizer's website.

Erin Fox, senior pharmacy director at University of Utah Health, expressed concerns about the impact of the damage on medicine supply. She stated that it would likely lead to long-term shortages while Pfizer works to either transfer production to other sites or rebuild the damaged complex. Pfizer acknowledged the situation and mentioned that they are assessing the impact on production. They also expressed their thoughts for their colleagues, patients, and the community as they begin the process of rebuilding from this weather incident.

The National Weather Service confirmed that the damage in North Carolina was consistent with an EF3 tornado, with wind speeds reaching up to 150 mph. The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office reported three people injured in the tornado, two of whom had life-threatening injuries. A preliminary report from neighboring Nash County indicated that 13 people were injured and 89 structures were damaged.

Meanwhile, other parts of the United States were also experiencing extreme weather conditions. Torrential rain caused flooding in parts of Kentucky, while communities from California to South Florida endured scorching heat, with temperatures reaching record highs. In Phoenix, Arizona, an all-time heat record was broken, and in Kentucky, rescuers were busy pulling people from rain-swamped homes and vehicles.

The situation does not appear to offer much relief in the near future, as forecasters predict continued heat and storms. Miami, for example, has been enduring a heat index of 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius) or more for weeks, with temperatures expected to rise even further over the weekend. As the country battles extreme weather events on multiple fronts, efforts to recover and rebuild from the damage caused by the tornado in North Carolina will be crucial in ensuring the continued supply of essential medications to U.S. hospitals.
